2010 C.A.R.B. Hall of Fame Members Announced

The selection committee has met and made their selections for 2010. We want to thank our selection committee of Diana Green, Jim Penney, Christina Smith, Bud Hunnicutt, J.D. Cormack, and Bob Baker for sorting through all the information. There were over 50 qualified candidates to be pared to five inductees. Their selections involved a race car owner and builder, a track official, a Hall of Famer and local historian, and two former drivers.

Congratulations to the five new inductees into the seventh class of the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame. The five to be inducted are Luther Brewer, Johnny Luteran, Jim Penney, Tiger Bob Williams, and Ken Taylor. Congratulations gentlemen!

Brewer built several cars (http://www.hoseheadforums.com/forum.cfm?ThreadID=9606) and had various drivers compete in his equipment including Ray Lee Goodwin and Tiger Bob Williams. Luteran was an official similar to the modern day Competition Director role working at both Olympic and Riverside Stadiums. Penney, even though he served on the selection committee and refused to vote for himself is a California Stock Car Hall of Famer and the local racing community historian. Tiger Bob Williams and Ken Taylor were legendary drivers in racing in the Midwest. Taylor died behind the wheel.

Also being inducted is the one time Pioneer class. In 2009 the members of C.A.R.B. added the following standing rule: “The intent of the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame is to honor those deserving individuals since the inception of this club in 1952. In 2010 those individuals whose racing contributions occurred before the creation of the organization and whose contributions per the Selection Committee are deserving of inclusion into the Hall of Fame will be inducted as a one-time Pioneer Class. All subsequent C.A.R.B. Hall of Fame inductees will be judged on their contributions to racing from 1952 to the Present.

The Pioneer class includes Jimmy Sams, Guy MacHenry, Otto Haggert, Jimmy Campbell, Oliver Jennings, Dutch Miller, Scotty Scoville, and George Smith. These eight men led to the way in the 1930s and 1940s to what racing has become today.

Hall of Fame Appreciation Dinner
Part of the process of starting a Hall of Fame involved changing the March Potluck dinner to the Hall of Fame Appreciation Dinner. This tradition has been a long-standing practice of C.A.R.B. to share a meal before the racing season starts. The 7th Hall of Fame Appreciation Dinner will be held on March 6, 2010 at the Gladstone Community Center, 6901 N. Homes at Central Park, Gladstone, Mo 64118 starting with dinner at 5:00 P.M. and the ceremonies at 6:00 P.M.

Last year brought a change to the dinner itself. Christy’s Catering served a delicious buffet dinner. To cover the cost of the meal and facility, tickets will be sold at $10 each. Tickets may be purchased by contacting Diana Green at 816-280-3713 or by mailing a check to C.A.R.B., 17580 Stubbs Station Road, Platte City, Mo 64079. Seating is limited so don’t delay.

The induction ceremonies are scheduled to begin at approximately 6:00 P.M. Programs, in honor of the inductees, will also be on sale. The proceeds will benefit the continuation of our Hall of
Fame. We want to thank Christina Smith, Tiffany Smith, and Mike Kraft for taking the time to
interview the inductees and prepare the program.

HALL OF FAME MUSEUM
Since 2004, the Central Auto Racing Boosters have been honoring our past. To date forty eight highly deserving racers have been inducted into the C.A.R.B Hall of Fame. C.A.R.B.’s long term goal has always been to have a permanent building serve as a Hall of Fame. Money has always been an issue. With new people on the Board of Directors come new ideas, ideas which we hope will lead to the establishment of the permanent Hall of Fame in the Kansas City area.

C.A.R.B. is proud to announce the raffle of a 1972 El Camino with a 502 cubic inch engine appraised at $30,000. All funds collected over and above the cost of the car will go to purchase or create a permanent location for the C.A.R.B. Hall of Fame and Museum. Your chance of winning this car will be one in 3,000. Drawing will be held at the 2010 C.A.R.B. Banquet held the first Saturday in December. You do not have to be present to win. Raffle tickets are $20 each or six tickets for $100. Tickets are available at all C.A.R.B. functions and online at www.kccarb.com.

HALL OF FAME STANDING RULE CLARIFICATION:

The Hall of Fame selection committee asked the Board of Directors to further clarify the intent and definition of whom qualifies for the Hall of Fame. (2) Nominees who have been out of racing for two years or longer will be considered automatically eligible. Active nominees will be considered eligible provided their contribution is and has been ongoing for a minimum of 20 years.
