I-35 Starts Season With A Bang

With beautiful weather, jam packed pits and a fast racy track fans filed in for the 2010 opener at I-35 Speedway

The IMCA Northern Sport Mods were first on the track tonight and with four young drivers starting in the top four spots it looked like youth would play a huge factor in the finishing order. JJ Baumli took the early lead and started to check out until something mechanically went south on his #46 machine. That allowed Mike Tanner to come from the inside of row four and he would hold off young Clay Hale to capture the first feature of 2010. Hale would finish second with third going to Chris Wright. Blake Peeler would hold off Brett Shields who had a great run in his first career race rounding out the top 5. Dale Hess started seventeenth and finished sixth to win the hard charger award.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks were next to hit the track. Cody Cleghorn jumped to an early lead but would be pressured all race long by eventual winner and newcomer Shannon Anderson, the two time defending IMCA National Champion. Anderson would have a great battle with Cleghorn and 2009 track champ Eric Stanton. Stanton would finish second, Cleghorn third, Matthew Lance crossed the line in fourth and Greg Kuehn fifth. Eric Stanton gained four spots to win the hard charger award.

The Border War Grand Nationals started out this season like they started out last season and thats with Mike Jones in victory lane. Jones last years points champ would hold off Travis Walker, Chad Shaw was third, Chad Clancy fourth and Gene Claxton fifth. Chad Clancy gained four spots to win the hard charger award.

Next up were the Border War Stock Cars. The Stock Cars put on a great show for the crowd tonight. Door to door, bumper to bumper, three to four wide action every lap. When the dust cleared Thomas Roberts back in his familiar 65x would hold off Brad Whitney who put on a late charge after a good move to pass two cars. Not far behind was Jake Cameron who finished third, Jason Ryun was fourth in a Lakeside Speedway Factory Stock and Gene Stigall from ninteenth finished fifth to grab the hard charger award.

Last on the track for this evenings event was the IMCA Modifieds. Junction City KS native Tim Echevarria made his third trip to I-35 Speedway a successful one as he worked his way around Cory Wray on about lap 15. Echevarria used the top side and Wray broke a front end to capture the checkered flag. Todd Wilson had a good run finishing second, right on Echevarrias back bumper for most of the last run. P.J. Conger rebounded from a starting postion of twenty-first and an early problem to finish third, Steve Starmer was fourth and Cory Wray, broken front end and all held on to fifth. Conger gained seventeen spots to win the hard charger.

You can now follow I-35 Speedway on both Twitter and Facebook, but one things for sure... You don't want to miss out on any of the action of the 2010 racing season at I-35 Speedway!
