Do you race a Modified somewhere between the Mississippi and the Rockies? If so, USMTS has a deal where for $500 you can by all 4 regional licenses plus one for The Hunt. A savings of $250 over buying them separate. The way the purse structure/pre-entry fee deal is set up with USMTS, there's a MINIMUM gain of $30 per event. It would take no more that 17 races to pay for that license and depending on what positions you might finish in in the A-mains, it could take as little as TWO or THREE races to gain back over $500 just because you have the license. There will be around 70 ONE-night show points races to choose from. They stretch from Texas to Minnesota.

Of course the big money comes by not only running well in those ONE-night, $2000-$3000-to-win (3 of them even pay $4000-to-win!) but in the point funds that those licenses make you eligible for. From $5000 to win a region up to $100,000 to sweep all the regions and The Hunt!

First region starts in 10 days -- time to buy a license and to get entered!!!

Hope you're headed for Houston when the roads clear up because...

USMTS: "The gettin'" might not ever get better than right now!

Is there a another changing of the guard happening on the USMTS tour? Based on just who won this past Saturday, maybe not, but from 2nd on back...maybe. It's only been 2 races but perhaps, new hopes can be raised just based on who is NOT racing on the tour right now.

Two guys who won more USMTS races than anyone over the past three-years and have 3 USMTS national championships between them aren't racing USMTS at the moment. Jason Hughes is running with the Lucas Oil Late Models in Florida while Ryan Gustin is home tuning on his Gressel Motorsports Late Model for some races later this spring. That alone is going to mean some newer faces in victory lane and 2 more spots open in pretty much every USMTS A-main at events they don't compete in including the 3 races coming up THIS THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY at Baytown's Royal Purple Raceway down by Houston.

There are three former champs still very much active though. One of them -- Jason Krohn -- raced off to the opening night win in Corpus in his MB Custom Chassis but had some bad luck the 2nd night that was actually touched off by his teammate -- defending USMTS national champ, Rodney Sanders. In a foggy feature event Sunday night in Corpus, Sanders got a little sideways going into turn one while trying to make a pass. Krohn couldn't avoid Sanders, made some contact and then got hit from behind leaving him with a 23rd place finish and 7th in points at -38. Sanders went to the back of the field with his MB Custom but rallied through the fog for an 8th place finish after a 10th to 3rd run in Saturday's feature. Sanders is 3rd in points at -23.

The other former champ -- '9-time' and the recently announced first USMTS Hall-of-Famer Kelly Shryock -- has his #3 back up in Iowa while he raced the Larry Clevenger/Richie Thompson owned #51 Skyrocket out of Shreveport. Kelly had a solid run of 7th Saturday night but took a provisional on Sunday and ended up 18th. Shryock is 12th in points at -56. Clevenger had problems with his Skyrocket on Saturday and had to withdraw his entry on Sunday.

Going into 2014 when people were selecting the favorites to win Casey's Cup this year, in addition to Sanders, the Scott brothers, Jeremy Payne and Zack VanderBeek were the names most often mentioned. Stormy Scott hasn't disappointed so far. After a 4th on Saturday, Scott stormed to win #1 in his LG2 Chassis and a hefty $4000 payday. Stormy's car owner Bryan Rowland had a nice run himself with a 4th on Sunday in his LG2. Johnny Scott did his part too with 15th to 8th and 13th to 7th runs with his in-house Ramirez Motorsports chassis and sits 6th in points at -36. His teammate Dereck Ramirez also made both A-mains this past weekend but had early trouble in both of them.

VanderBeek and especially Payne got off to somewhat slower starts. After a nice 14th to 6th run on Saturday, the "Z-man" didn't care for the fog much and ended up 20th and tied for 10th in the standings at -55. Payne's finishes were uncharacteristicly 19th and 22nd. Both of these drivers are very much looking forward to Baytown this weekend though. They have won 5 of the last 8 races there between them with VanderBeek winning the last 2 with his LG2 ride. Payne swept all 3 events in November of 2012 with his GRT. The other winners were Gustin, Clyde Dunn, Jr who also wasn't at Corpus and Sanders.

One only has to look at the current points to see some new names though. While the winners may not have been that shocking, perhaps the runner-ups are a little more interesting. John Webb has formed a team that features Kansan Rick Beebe and fellow Okie Joe Duvall behind the wheels of MB2 Custom Chassis. When he's not working and promoting his Southern Oklahoma Speedway back home in Ardmore, John will race too. Beebe followed up a 10th place finish on Saturday with a solid runner-up on Sunday after outdueling Rowland and Dan Hilsabeck in the fog. He's tied with Sanders for 2nd in points at -23. Duvall also had a top 10 on the weekend after starting 22nd on Sunday and made both A-mains and 'the boss' put his #87 in the A-main on Saturday night as well.

Steve Whiteaker, Jr. looked like a winner for half-a-race on Saturday night at his home track but ended up getting 2nd with his Hughes Chassis. He was fast again on Sunday but got caught up in the lap 2 contact between Sanders and Krohn. Ended up 24th. That leaves him 8th in points at -42.

Sunday was a unique night. Corpus finally had a warm day after being 25 to 30 degrees below normal on Thursday and Friday. Good racing on Saturday night. On Sunday, the track was a little too wet to begin with and then hooked up in the heats with a narrow groove. That made passing difficult and the draw very important. The track came in good during the Limited Modified A-main -- the next-to-last race of the night -- but then the fog started settling in. It got worse during the USMTS A-main and UN-settled a lot of drivers. Tear-aways were a premium. One driver said it was like driving in the rain with no wipers. Whether some of the racers figured out how to manage their tear-offs or whether it was what-you-don't-know won't hurt you, there were some pretty spectacular drives through the field in both USMTS A-mains over the weekend even if the fans could only see about half of it on Sunday.

As if dealing with the Scott twins and other Las Cruces, New Mexico racers wasn't enough, here comes Jake Gallardo in a GRC Chassis from the same hometown. After a 22nd to 11th run on Saturday, Jake started 15th on Sunday and raced through the fog for a 3rd place finish and the hardcharger award. Gallardo is 4th in points at -29. Another veteran Las Cruces racer Jimmy Ray was the pole-sitter for Sunday's race and is looking for some good finishes this weekend and then the next two weekends as well when the USMTS Culf Coast Border Region tour comes 'home' to El Paso and Las Cruces, February 21st, 22nd, 27th, 28th and March 1st.

5th in the standings is a young driver from Louisiana that ended the year red hot and now has started 2014 the same way. Cade Dillard swept the support class Limited Modifieds to the tune of $2500 on Saturday and Sunday with his Express Racecars Chassis but it didn't end there. Saturday saw him go from 11th starting position up to a top 5 finish in the USMTS feature with his #97 Sidebiter chassis and that turned out to be big in more ways than one. After a bad draw, Cade was one of those who suffered from poor track position in his heat and B on Sunday. Thanks to his 5th on Saturday, he used a provisional to start 23rd and then raced his way to a 9th place finish -- would have been good enough for the hardcharger award except provisionals aren't eligible for that award. Cade sits 5th in points at -32.

Vidor, Texas racer Tracy Denby, Jr. also had a solid weekend. Tracy raced a Skyrocket Modified to 9th and 11th place finishes and had some excellent qualifying runs. He is 9th in points at -46. Denby & Dillard were 2 of only 3 drivers that raced both classes in Corpus with Denby driving his IRP Chassis Limited Modified to 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

Iowa's Daniel Hilsabeck held up the Hughes chassis banner quite well on the weekend as well. He had a great qualifying effort on Saturday when he went from 9th to 3rd in his heat but ended up wrecked out early in the feature. He rebounded well on Sunday with a 12th to 5th run. He's tied with VanderBeek for 10th in points at -55.

There were others who ran well and didn't get the finish. Adam Penn of Shreveport won his heat and was a solid 2nd with his Hughes for 14 laps when his car broke in Saturday night's feature. Then he hopped in the #5* Hughes on Sunday that his brother Casey drove to a 13th place finish on Saturday. He started 16th in the A, raced into the top 10 before fading back to a 16th place finish.

Several Texans had their moments. TJ Steele of Winnsboro missed the A on Saturday but won his B on Sunday and then advanced from 14th to 6th in the A on Sunday in the 4S Motorsports Hughes. Sean Jones of Mansfield, Texas had a fast LG2. Won his heat on Saturday but a mechanical problem took him out of the feature. Trevor Egbert (Hughes) of Salado and Jesse Manning of Brazoria (GRT) made both As. Egbert had a a 12th and a 14th while Manning finished 17th and 13th. Phillip Houston of Odessa also made both As in his LG2 with a best finish of 15th. Rookies Michael Walker (Kraft) of Rosharon and Joe Spillman (CAM) of Marble Falls made Saturday's A while another rookie Austin Thiess (Hughes) of Hockley scored a 12th place finish on Sunday. Walker came within one position of qualifying for both A-mains.

Kansas rookie Darron Fuqua struggled at a new track for him on Saturday but made the A on Sunday. Need to thank all the racers for their participation down in Corpus. The cold weather sure made it harder than it normally would. Two long distance towers -- Tim Thomas of North Dakota and Jeff Conner of Iowa -- are hoping for better luck this week as they missed both As. Texans Cody Smith, Rory Jordan and Shane Sprinkle are also looking to make their first USMTS A-main feature this weekend at Baytown and a big thanks to locals Lawrence Mikulencak (put that man in a top ride and watch things happen!), Jason Borlace and Jamie Cambell. Big thanks to Owen Pitman and the folks at South Texas Speedway for giving this a shot! Hopefully, it'll happen again with 70 degree weather like we're supposed to get this weekend in Baytown.

Interesting start. Come check out USMTS Baytown this weekend!!

Cold where you are this week? Maybe your computer can warm you up a little.
I was looking at some of the forecasts for up north and unless you're an ice fisherman, THIS SUX! Kansas City--St. Louis--Chicago all COLD. Clarksville Speedway (Tennessee) race postponed till next week due to cold. Minneapolis? Don't ask! Today, Friday & Saturday the Hi temps range from 0 to 15 above there while the lows are from 6 below to 19 BELOW ZERO! OUCH! Sure makes opening day seem far, far away... BUT...
Down in Las Cruces, New Mexico at Southern New Mexico Speedway where the USMTS gang has gathered up, they are calling for mid-70s and no chance of r--- over the same three days. Can't make it? Well just file this info away in the back of your mind for next year and let's do plan B this year: RACINDIRT.COM!

I watched the live USMTS show from El Paso Speedway Park last week. GREAT RACE! The same folks own and prep both tracks out there and SNMS may be even better this week if that's possible. I mean I watched videos from Texas last week and Florida the week before and all the winter racing every where around the country and none of the Modified racing I saw compares to that race at El Paso last Saturday. It's the combination of track prep, great cars, great series and skilled drivers that get the credit too! 40-lap feature with ONE minor caution. The winner came from 13th and endured some excellent 2 and 3-wide battles on his way to the front. The 4th place finisher started 14th, the 6th place finisher started 16th and at one time the 18th place starter -- that #75 pictured here -- was as high as 6th place before settling for 7th. 23 cars started the race, 23 cars were still running at the end and 20 of them were on the lead lap! If there was a better Modified race than that ANYWHERE in the last month, send me the video link! I want to watch it!

So, being that it's not going to be fit for men nor beasts outside in much of the country, why not stay warm inside and log onto www.RacinDirt.com and watch some USMTS Modified action from sunny New Mexico!!! Don't get alarmed, it's still a night race! Ordering info: http://goo.gl/8NFhGQ
