Kansas City, KS – It was another strong night of racing at Lakeside Speedway last Friday night. As the race season heads down the final stretch expect more and more great racing action on the track every Friday night. This Friday night, August 7th, is Kid’s Night At The Races!!! Kids 7 to 12 that come in with a paid admission will receive some school supplies for the upcoming school year, for kids 6 and under will get a goody bag and if that wasn’t enough Lakeside Speedway is going to be giving away 10 bikes on the night! Another surprise will be in store, but fans will have to show up Friday night to see what that is!!!!

Last Week’s Recap…
Last week Gene Claxton finally put together 15 strong laps and won his 1st USRA B Mod Feature of 2015, the Kerry Davis show continued once again in the USRA Modified division as he collected win #6 on the season, Kevin Anderson started from the pole and finished #1 in the USRA Stock Car A Main for the 7th time this season and big #11 came to Tim Shields in the Grand Nationals.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Kerry Davis is having one of his best years in a Modified at Lakeside Speedway in 2015. Last week was Davis’ 6th feature win of the season and it cemented him in the top of the point standing for yet another week. He currently has a 92 point lead over Tim Karrick and that might just be enough for him to close things out. Davis would probably be higher in the National USRA points, but he only runs 1 track and he doesn’t have the number of races some of the others do.

Tim Karrick is 4th in National Points in USRA Modifieds as of the last update on July 26th.

A driver that put together a good run last week was Jared Stiens. Stiens battled with Davis at the start of the feature last week, but couldn’t win the battle for the top spot. Stiens, did however, fend off the rest of the competition to finish 2nd. It was his best finish of the season.

Nic Bidinger’s chance for a 3 peat might be out of reach. With some help he could still get it done, but right now he is 134 points out and it’s going to be very difficult to win a 3rd straight title.

Former MLRA Late Model and Southern Mo. Modified ace, Eric Turner, made it to Lakeside Speedway last Friday night and finished with a top 5 finishing in the 5th spot.

48 is the number of different USRA Modified drivers that have race at Lakeside this season.

Larry ‘Bubba’ Harvey #3, Kansas City, KS.

Bubba Harvey has been a fixture at Lakeside Speedway in the Modified division since the return to dirt back in 2000. Since that time Harvey has won his fair share of races. This season hasn’t been the most successful, but Harvey hasn’t been running the full season and things are starting to get better. You can never can’t out one of the veterans at Lakeside Speedway, they have been through the trenches and they can get through the tough times just as well as the good. Look for Harvey to rebound this week, kids at the track have always been big fans of Harvey’s and with it being Kid’s Night he should shine!

USRA Stock Cars…

Win #7 came to Kevin Anderson last Friday night. As he collected the win it made me ponder and think; what if he never had that bad accident during the wingless sprint car show? Could he have more than 7 wins if he hadn’t sat out? Could he be on top of the points right now? These are questions that will go unanswered and as of now Anderson will be content with racking up wins.

Brett Heeter, the points leader, finished in the runner-up spot and it helped pad his points lead. Right now Heeter is holding on to a HUGE 185 point lead over 2nd place, Bobby Tavis III.

Last week’s race was a good one. There was a ton of passing and battling for position all over the speedway. Several spots were up for grabs all the way to the flag stand.

Jeff Elder continues to surprise everyone after his rollover crash a few weeks ago. Elder didn’t miss a single race and last week he was back in the top 5 once again.

Since struggling a little to learn his new chassis, Nate Barnes, has been slowly crawling up the point standings. Each and every week it seems like Barnes is at the front half of the field and knocking on the door to victory lane. It shouldn’t be long before he does take home a win.

Jake Newman #222, Kansas City, MO.

Jake Newman has been a frontrunner when he competes at Lakeside Speedway. Over the years he has had some success at Lakeside and even knocked down a few W’s. This season he just hasn’t done it, but it’s not because of Newman’s effort. This season Newman has led laps, but something always happens or someone always comes up just a tick faster. Last week’s 3rd place finish has me betting that Newman’s shot at a win will come this Friday night. Keep an eye on Newman this week he could be calling victory lane home!

USRA B Mods…

Was there any doubt that Gene Claxton would win a feature in 2015? I was beginning to worry about the crafty veteran, but I should know better than to doubt a sure thing. Claxton put on a great race to take his 1st win of the season last Friday night. It could be possible that win #2 could happen Friday night.

Ed Noll started 6th last week and finished 3rd in the feature. It was another top 5 finish for Noll who is having an awesome season in the ultra competitive USRA B Mod division. As the season is working it’s way to the finish Noll has a 46 point lead over Luke Nieman in the points.

In the top 10 in USRA National B Mod Points Brad Smith and Shadren Turner are 3rd and 10th respectively.

Matt Pugh and Terry Bivins tied for the Hard Charger last week in the USRA B Mod A Main. Pugh started 15th and finished 7th, while Bivins started 14th and finished 7th.

63 is the number of different USRA B Mod drivers that have logged points at Lakeside in 2015.

Rodney Phillips #21, Kansas City, MO.

This season Rodney Phillips has almost burst on the scene. A season ago, Phillips was 42nd in points and this season he is currently sitting in 20th spot. That’s a huge jump in the standings. Last week Phillips turned in a 6th place run that earned him the right to be the driver of the week to watch this week. It could be conceivable that Phillips just might edge even further into the top 5 this week.

Grand Nationals…

For the 11th time this season Tim Shields strolled into victory lane. Shield’s performance this season might be one of the most dominant seasons any driver has ever had at Lakeside Speedway. That’s saying a lot considering the great drivers that have raced at Lakeside.

If there was an award for runner-up finishes this season it would have to go to Nick Newton. Night in and night out you can count on Shields and Newton 1st and 2nd in the Grand Nationals.

Nick Drew secured the Hard Charger award last week in the main event. Drew finished 3rd after starting 8th in the feature.

Looking at consistency in the division, Donnie Brown has been in or near the top 5 every week.

Marshall Jewett #3E, Gardner, KS.

If there is a driver that has turned the most laps at Lakeside Speedway it might be Marshall Jewett. Jewett for many years has done double duty at Lakeside in the Stock Cars and Grand National divisions. This year he has spent more time in the Grand National, but the fact that he has such a good knowledge of the Lakeside surface puts him as a favorite when he races. Not only is Jewett a good racers, he is well liked by his peers and the fans. He is one of those racers that shows up every week and never causes a problem. It’s about time he runs to the front in the Grand Nationals and this might be his week.
