2015 Champions Crowned At Thunder Hill Speedway

Mayetta, KS – It seems like just yesterday that the 2015 race season was getting underway. Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway the 2015 season came to a close with Championship Night at the Races.

All 5 IMCA divisions crowned their champions. In the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds Steven Bowers Jr. was the only driver that locked up his title prior to Saturday night’s races. After winning the first 8 races of the season in the Bad Boyz Bail Bonds IMCA Northern Sport Mods, Tyler Frye took home the championship. It’s rare that a rookie wins a track championship but that’s exactly what Dominic Thyfault did in the Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Cars. Another rare feat is to win a championship without ever winning a feature on the season and that’s what Tyler Garst did in claiming the Midwest Vending IMCA Hobby Stock Championship. The only driver to win for a championship for the 2nd consecutive year was Austin Umschied in the Casey’s General Store IMCA Sport Compacts.

Now that we have told you who the champs are, now we can tell you how each of the 5 championship features came out.

In the Bad Boyz Bail Bonds IMCA Northern Sport Mod Feature it was a familiar face driving into victory lane, Tyler Frye.

Heading into the night Frye had been kept out of Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane for the last 3 weeks. This was a characteristic that Frye wasn’t accustom to. After winning the first 8 features of the year, Frye was not only looking for a track championship but he was also looking for a national championship.

Austin Charles was celebrating his 18th birthday Saturday night and it appeared he was going to provide his own present in the form of a feature win.

For several laps Charles led the field around the big high banked track. Unfortunately, Frye had a different plan.

Frye, who started 12th in the feature, began to eat away at Charles lead late in the race before a yellow flag would help him out.

On the restart Frye put the pressure on the youngster and the battle was on. It wouldn’t be long before Frye would take the lead from Charles, but in fine fashion the young Charles kept fighting back. The two would go back and forth before Frye would speed off to win #9 on the season.

The win would cap off his championship and it would help add to his quest for the IMCA N. Sport Mod National Championship.

Charles would finish 2nd on the night, Bryan Rigsby, who finished 2nd in the points, raced his way from 11th to 3rd in the main, 4th went to Jacob Davis and rounding out the top 5 was the hard charger of the night Steven Goodman who started 24th and finished 5th!

The Midwest Vending IMCA Hobby Stock Feature held the most excitement with the points championship going down to the white flag lap.

Tyler Garst entered the night with a 1 point lead on Tommy Fose and with just a 1 point lead, Garst would have to finish ahead of Fose to claim the championship. If Fose were to finish 1 spot ahead of Garst they would tie and Fose held the tie breaker as he had 1 feature win to his credit.

During the feature the two would go back and forth inside the top 5. Garst would lead Fose and then Fose would lead Garst.

Tyler Hinrichs, who came into the night with 2 feature wins already, was out in front of the pack celebrating a strong run. Unfortunately, all the eyes were on the battle for the championship and it would come down to the white flag lap.

As the field came to the white flag, Fose knew that he had to get in front of Garst. The two drivers would head into turn one with Fose trailing Garst.

Fose put a daring path deep into the bottom of turn 1. He would wash up in front of Garst in turn two. As his momentum carried him towards the top of turn 2, Garst would drive under him and regain the spot as they came out of turn two. Garst had a slight advantage. Fose was on his door as they started down the backstretch and that’s when Fose’s championship dreams ended.

Fose went off the top of the track and straight into the implement tires and back stretch wall. He would endure one of the hardest crashes of the season. Luckily, he would come out of the melee unscathed.

Garst, meanwhile, was able to finish the event and with Fose out would claim the title.

Hinrich’s would hold off the competition and win his 3rd Hobby Stock feature of the season, 2nd went to Nicholas Ronnebaum, Garst would finish in the 3rd spot, 4th went to Ryan Sutter (who finished every race he ran this year in the top 5) and Mallory Stiffler logged the 5th place finish.

Another exciting battle in the points was in the Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Car class.

Dominic Thyfault, a rookie, came into the night with an 18 point lead over 2nd place Greg Deters.

James King and Robert Garst would bring the field to the green flag and when the green flag waved it was another feature event full of excitement.

Garst would jump out to the early advantage, but a lot of action was going on throughout the field behind him. A lot of side by side, wheel to wheel action could be seen on the speedway.

As the feature rolled on the points leader, Thyfault, would see the unthinkable a DNF! Thyfault smacked into the front stretch wall hard early in the event. The hit was hard enough that he would not be able to make any repairs and would settle for a 18 place finish.

This meant all Deters had to do was get a win and he would have a shot at the title.

Deters would have a shot late in the race, but it would never develop.

Mat Stallbaumer, who won 3 features previously this season, was on the move. One by one Stallbaumer marched from his 3rd row outside starting spot to the front of the field. At the front he would hit all of his marks and he would run away with win #4 on the season. It was the most wins for any driver in the division this season.

In post race tech Garst would be disqualified for an illegal part.

After the adjustment Gene Stigall would come in 2nd, 3rd went to Deters, who finished 3 points away from the championship, 4th was Justin Merriman with his best finish of the year and Brandon Conkwright finished 5th after having to fight back from the rear of the field early in the event.

One of the only classes that crowned their champion before the event started was the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds.

Steven Bowers Jr. entered the night with a 43 point lead over Tom Charles. By virtue of the point system it was mathematically impossible for anyone to overthrow the leader.

During the A Main a couple of team cars, Justin Becker and Troy Baumgartner, battled at the front of the pack.

Mat Stallbaumer, the winner of the Stock Car feature, made a bid for the lead and looked to double up in victory lane on the night. As the race wore on Stallbaumer’s ride went away.

Allen Halderman had a good run to the front of the field and looked strong as he took his shot at the top spot. Halderman, a former champ, would get some pressure from Brandon Blochlinger just passed the halfway mark.

Blochlinger would snag the top spot after a battle. During the battle Tom Charles would also come to the front of the pack as he got by Halderman as well.

As Blochlinger stayed at the front of the field, Charles would cut into his lead. Late in the race Charles would get a break that might help him make one final charge late in the race, as a yellow flag.

On the restart it wasn’t meant to be as Charles gave his best effort. Blochlinger had found the right path for him around Thunder Hill Speedway. It was a path that would push him to victory lane. The win was Blochlinger’s 1st win of the season at Thunder Hill and he became the 6th different winner on the season.

Charles would finish 2nd, the 2015 Track Champ, Bowers, finished 3rd, 4th went to Halderman and Clay Hale returned to finish 4th after starting 10th in the main event.

Kaylee Diekman took home the feature win in the Casey’s General Store IMCA Sport Compact Feature.

Diekman led from wire to wire as she bested the effort of the 2015 Track Champ, Austin Umscheid.

Third would go to Donnie Dale and rounding out the field was Rhonda Mewes in 4th.

The points season came to and end Saturday night but there is still one HUGE event left on 2015 schedule; THUNDER ON THE HILL.

October 9th and 10th the signature event at Thunder Hill Speedway will explode with great racing action with the best drivers in the Midwest on display.
