Mayetta, KS – The 2015 race season came to a close Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway with the conclusion of the Thunder on The Hill. It would be fitting that the last race of the season would go down to the final lap!

A total of 24 cars would start 3 wide and 8 rows deep to begin the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified Feature.

Shane Demey from Denison, IA took to the early lead in the feature event. He would hang out at the top spot after a wild melee would ensue with cars jockeying for positions all over the speedway.

The previous night’s winner, Corey Burch, Jay Noteboom were the first two drivers to put pressure on the leader at the front of the pack.

Several grooves of racing were evident as drivers worked the entire track to improve their positions. Steven Bowers Jr., the 2015 track champion, was one of those drivers looking to improve his starting position.

Starting 8th on the grid for the feature, Bowers found himself in moving past the competition and setting his sights on the leader as he rolled into 2nd place. Bowers would take over the lead and began to build a lead as the race wore down.

With 7 laps remaining in the feature a couple of yellow flag situations would change the complexion of the race.

On the restart Ryan Gaylord, who showed up only for Saturday night’s event, started to eat into Bowers’ lead as the race wore down. At times it looked as if Gaylord was going to make a bid for the top spot but a missed mark would drop him back 4 to 5 car lengths.

Bowers and Gaylord weren’t the only ones looking for the win. Dylan Sherfick, Burch, Noteboom and Shawn Anderson were in shouting distance of the top 2 as the final laps came down to the wire.

Gaylord was able to eliminate Bowers’ lead as the began to work lap 27. As the two drivers would come to the flag stand Gaylord would move into the lead by the slimmest of margins. As the raced to the white flag the two would go side by side. One corner would belong to Bowers the next would go to Gaylord.

On the white flag lap Gaylord, from Lakewood, CO., took advantage of the top spot and dropped down to take Bowers’ line away. The move helped Gaylord take home the win that was worth more than $2,500 and it gave the fans something to stand up and cheer about.

Bowers would finish a very close runner up, Burch’s hot streak continued with a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Sherfick and Noteboom would round out the top 5.

Heat race winners were Burch, Noteboom, Gaylord and Demey. The winner of the B Feature was Johnny Saathoff.

A dominating performance was put on display in the Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Car Feature.

Another driver from Lakewood, CO., Angel Munoz, decided to come to Thunder Hill for Saturday night’s races and just like his partner in the Modifieds (Gaylord), Munoz showed the crowd that he had what it takes to win.

Munoz put on a strong display in his heat race winning by a large margin. He would be rewarded with the pole position for the A Main. It was all he would need.

As the green flag dropped Munoz checked out on the competition and ran away with the big money victory on the final night.

The battle for 2nd was a dandy one. If you threw out Munoz’s dominating run this might have been one of the best features of the year. A total of 7 drivers would go back and forth behind Munoz looking for the runner-up spot. Four and 5 wide racing was seen on the track. Door to door battles were evident. A little bump drafting was going on! It was a shoot out for all 25 laps.

In the end Josh Everhart, who started 6th in the feature, would throw together one of his best runs in his Stock Car and finish 2nd, Bryan Rigsby, who seemed to be in a battle with someone on every lap, raced his way to a 3rd place finish, coming in 4th was the Hard Charger on the night, Kyle Stallbaumer as he started 14th and Mat Stallbaumer finished in the 5th position.

Heat race winners were Munoz, Mat Stallbaumer and Robert Garst.

Tyler Frye is a driver who has a lot of talent. In the Bad Boyz Bail Bonds IMCA Northern Sport Mods there are a lot of tough competitors at Thunder Hill Speedway. Winning 10 features on the season, a track championship and an IMCA National Championship, Frye has proven his talent, toughness and tenacity this season.

On Friday night Frye picked up the feature win and with a possible move up to the IMCA Modified division next season, the fans of Thunder Hill Speedway might have gotten to see Frye’s last time behind the wheel of a N. Sport Mod last night.

Jeff Hooker, from Minot, ND, got out in front of the field for the early lead in the feature.

Luke Stallbaumer and Dusty Leonard would keep pace with Hooker at the front of the pack. Trenton Kleweno was also hanging around in the top 4 battling it out as the feature wore on.

Frye, who started 9th, was on the move but then stalled out in the 5th position. A restart after a yellow flag situation saw Frye put his skills to the test. On the restart Frye would use the high and low line to pass all 4 competitors to take the lead. That was until another yellow flag dropped on the feature event. Frye would go back to 5th on the ensuing restart.

The green flag would wave again and for the 2nd time Frye would move to the lead on the restart passing the front 4, but another yellow would come out negating the move. Frye would go back to 5th, again.

As the green dropped for a third time. The field would fan out a little better and Frye’s run to the front would be delayed.

Hooker would hang on to the top spot until Frye cleared the competition and moved into 2nd. A stout battle for the top spot would rage until Frye got the upper hand coming out of turn 4. Frye would close out the feature with win #11 at Thunder Hill Speedway.

Hooker would finish 2nd, 3rd went to Stallbaumer, Dusty Leonard would come home in the 4th position and 5th would be Trenton Kleweno.

Heat race winners were Hooker, Leonard and Stallbaumer.

The first feature of the night was the Midwest Vending IMCA Hobby Stocks.

Thunder Hill Speedway regular, Nicholas Ronnebaum, jumped out into the lead over Patrick Pellman at the start of this one.

The two front-runners would battle it out lap after lap until a long red flag situation fell on the speedway.

As the race resumed the two drivers would regain their battle at the front of the pack. Ronnebaum, a 2x feature winner in 2015, would have his work cut out for him. Not only was Pellman behind him. Several top notch drivers were also in the mix looking to haul in the big money win.

Watching the action unfold in this class was exciting for the crowd as they got to see all kinds of scenarios unfold as they came to the close of this feature.

Ronnebaum would get the upper hand in the remaining laps and closed out the win, giving him 3 on the season.

Pellman finished a close 2nd to Ronnebaum, Greg Gilbert, started 6th, raced his way to a hard fought 3rd place finish, continuing his streak of having a top 5 finish in every race this season was Ryan Sutter, who finished 4th, and rounding out the top 5 was Luke Wassom.

Heat race winners were Ronnebaum, Pellman and Roy Armstrong.

Thunder Hill Speedway’s 2015 came to a close on Saturday night.

Fans, racers and sponsors made a lasting impression on the fans during the season and this should give way to a strong upcoming 2016!
