Kansas City, KS – It was a chilly night at Lakeside Speedway on Friday night for the season opener. Once the green flag waived for the first race the heat rose rather quickly.

It was a year ago that Kerry Davis rolled to a USRA Modified Championship at Lakeside Speedway. Friday night it appeared that Davis is still not done with winning races at Lakeside.

Joey Galloway and Kerry Davis would bring the field to the start of the USRA Modified A Main event.

At the start of the race it would be Galloway taking the lead on lap 1, but last year’s champ Davis was right on his heals and would take the lead away on lap number 2.

As Davis held down the top spot Darron Fuqua, Tim Karrick, Joey Galloway and Nic Bidinger would try to keep pace.

A good battle brewed early for that 2nd spot between Fuqua and Karrick.

Davis would stay in command until the final 3 laps of the main event. Lapped traffic changed the complexion of this race as it allowed Fuqua to close in on the leader.

As the two driver came to the white flag Davis moved up on the track and Fuqua took to the bottom. Side by side they would go but at the stripe it would be Davis picking up the opening night victory at Lakeside Speedway.

Fuqua would come home in the runner-up spot, 3rd would go to Tim Karrick, 4th was Mark Schafman and rounding out the top 5 would be Nic Bidinger.

USRA Modified Heat Race Winners were Bidinger, Fuqua and Galloway.

Last year was a tough year for the former USRA B Mod National Champion, Chad Clancy.

After a year of mowing down competitors and collecting win after win, Clancy took a little break and had to learn a new chassis. He would still pick up some wins in 2015 it just wasn’t at the pace of his 2014 season.

Friday night Clancy showed that he might be ready to go back to the dominating pace of 2014 as he won the USRA B Mod Feature event.

A whopping number of B Mods, 37, checked in to compete on opening night.

A pair of former National Champions Clancy and Andy Bryant looked to be setting up an epic battle at the front of the feature as it got ready to kick off.

The green flag would wave and it was Clancy getting the drop on the competition. Lap after lap he would not miss his marks and his Prime Racing Rage Chassis extended the lead lap after lap.

As Clancy raced to the finish Bryant was able to chip away at the lead as the leader battled with lapped traffic.

It looked as if Bryant was going to have an opportunity on the final lap to make a run at Clancy. Clancy would use the lapped traffic to his benefit down the back straight to gain enough cushion to secure win #1 on the season.

Bryant would settle for the runner-up spot, holding on to 3rd was Mike Tanner, 4th was last year’s champ Ed Noll and coming home 5th was Gene Claxton.

USRA B Mod Heat Race Winners were Tim Powell, Bryant, Noll, Tanner and Clancy. Steve McDowell won the USRA B Mod B Feature.

A few years ago Trevor Hunt was touted as the next ‘BIG’ thing in area racing. The youngster showed signs of brilliance as he battled it out on tour with the USMTS Modified Series.

Some time off from racing gave the youngster a chance to put things into perspective and Friday night he debuted in both the USRA Factory Stocks and USRA B Mods. After watching him race it shows why everyone should keep an eye on him, he is a good race car driver.

For his first time in a USRA Stock Car Hunt did a masterful job. He picked up the win in his heat race earlier in the night and it gained him a starting spot on the front row of the A Main.

It was a year ago that Brett Heeter and Kevin Anderson dominated this division and with the emergence of Hunt and other drivers, this division could get even better than it already is.

Hunt took to an early lead. Smooth on and off the gas his lead would build throughout the race. It looked like he was going to cruise to the easy victory until a late race caution would set up a green, white, checkered finish.

Heading to the restart Hunt would feel a lot of pressure from the two dominant drivers of 2015, Heeter and Anderson.

Hunt would jump back out to the lead and he would have to work his magic as both Heeter and Anderson were working hard to get by him. Anderson was on the low side and Heeter jumped to the high side. The white flag would wave and Hunt kept Anderson at bay behind him. The real threat would come from Heeter make his high side run.

At the finish it would be Hunt with a half a car length lead over Heeter.

Heeter would finish 2nd, Anderson would finish 3rd, 4th went to Ryun and going from 9th to 5th in the main event was Chad Walker.

USRA Stock Car Heat Race Winners were Heeter and Hunt.

The Factory Stock class debuted on opening night at Lakeside Speedway.

This is a more restricted version of the Stock Car division and in the end it was Stock Car driver, Jason Ryun, bringing home the inaugural victory.

Ryun started in the 3rd position but slowly found his way to the front of the field and then had to hold off the competition to bring home the win.

Kerry Ayers finished in the 2nd spot, Tim Billings, was in a good battle with the leader until he caught the wall and lost his momentum, finished 3rd, Don Johnson drove to a 4th place finish and rounding out the top 5 was Oliver Harris.

Factory Stock Heat Race Winner was Ayers.

The Grand National Feature event looked awfully familiar on Friday night.

Tim Shields, who won the championship last season in impressive fashion, got into an early battle with Nic Newton and then expanded his lead and was surely on the way to his 1st win of the 2016 season. At least that is what everyone in the crowd thought.

On lap number 10 something would go wrong in Shields car as he came off of turn 4 he put it into the infield.

As Shields pulled off the track the lead would be taken over by Nic Newton.

That was all the help that Newton, a multiple time feature winner in the division, would need as he took the checkered flag.

Darren Kling finished 2nd, 3rd went to Nick Drew, marching from 7th to finish 4th was Donnie Brown and Don Marrs finished in the 5th position.

Grand National Heat Race Winner was Marrs.
