Mayetta, KS – Opening night had to come a week later than planned this season at Thunder Hill Speedway due to heavy rains a week ago.

The fans and racers all came out in droves on Saturday night for the new opening night, which happened to be Kenny Schrader night at the race track.

A whopping total of 106 cars checked in to battle it out on Saturday night and the fans were treated to some of the best racing action in the Midwest.

In the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified division all eyes were on Kenny Schrader. The NASCAR legend has moved on from racing full time on pavement to racing over 100 shows a year on dirt.

Schrader might have had a lot of eyes on him but there were several heavy hitters in the IMCA Modified division that checked in to show the fans, and Schrader, that they are good drivers too.

One driver, Jordy Nelson, has had some success over the years at Thunder Hill Speedway. On Saturday night Nelson jumped out to the early advantage. The big question was would he be able to hang on as several heavy hitters were on their way to the front.

As Nelson held down the top spot a lot of passing for position was going on behind him. Troy Baumgartner, Tyler Frye, Jordan Grabouski, Schrader and Darron Fuqua were just a few drivers that were making their way to the front.

The laps would click off and Nelson would keep everyone at bay as he would pick up the first win of the season.

Time would run out on Grabouski, a former IMCA National Modified Champ, who finished 2nd, Tyler Frye, the defending IMCA N. Sport Mod National Champ, came home in 3rd, 4th went to Schrader and rounding out the top 5 was Fuqua.

Heat race winners on the evening were Tom Charles, Nelson and Kyle Olberding. The B Feature win went to Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

The Bud’s Auto Service IMCA Stock Car divison saw 23 racers check in on Saturday night.

In 2015 this was a very popular class with fans and racers at Thunder Hill Speedway. This season it looks like it will repeat the same characteristic.

After a wild feature that saw plenty of action, Matt Haid stood tall in the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane. Haid, looking strong in the early part of the 2016 season, took home a hard fought win on Saturday night.

Anthony Deters put together one of his best races ever at Thunder Hill Speedway finishing in the runner-up spot, Shaylon Holloway made some noise throughout the feature but came up short as he would finish 3rd, a late race charge by Geoff Jermark would put him in the 4th spot at the finish and Steven Corning brought home a 5th place finish in the feature.

Heat race winners were Jermark, Haid and Brandon Conkwright.

The most popular class at Thunder Hill Speedway is the JAG Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mods. On Saturday 35 N. Sport Mods turned out to see who would be ‘King’ on night #1.

It was a wild contest in the main event, that saw a few yellows on the night. In the end it was a familiar face returning to victory lane.

Shawn Harker isn’t a regular at Thunder Hill Speedway. He drops in when he can because he loves the competition and he loves the facility. It seems like each time he shows up to Thunder Hill Speedway he, somehow, finds himself battling at the top of the feature lineup. Saturday night was no different.

The early battle of the night for the top spot happened between Dustin Thulin and Dusty Leonard. These two went at it right from the drop of the green flag.

Harker was working his way through traffic heading to the front, while the leaders were shooting it out.

Just passed the halfway point Harker would take the lead and once in the top spot, he would hold on to the finish.

Thulin would win the battle with Leonard and take home a 2nd place finish, 3rd would go to Leonard, Bryan Rigsby made a late race run to finish 4th and Brandon Spanger rounded out the top 5.

Heat race winners were Matthew Crowell, Dalton Blow, Harker and Kyle Stallbaumer. The B Feature win went to Jacob Crowell.

In 2016 look for some awesome racing action in the Caseys General Store IMCA Hobby Stock division. If Saturday night’s feature event is a look at what’s to come, this could be an awesome year.

Ryan Sutter didn’t pick up a win last season in the Hobby Stock division. He was close. Every race last year he finished in the top 5, a very impressive stat.

This year he didn’t want to say that he never stopped off in Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane!

The feature event was a great one. Sutter would battle with Tyler Hinrichs all the way to the flag stand. The drag race out of turn number 4 would decide it and at the stripe it was Sutter getting the win over Hinrichs by less than a car length!

Action all over the track for position was stellar as well.

Hinrichs had to settle for the 2nd position, a hard charging Cody Williams finished 3rd, 4th went to defending champ, Tyler Garst, and Levi Henery drove his way to a 5th place finish.

Heat race winners were Hinrichs and Sutter.

Action returns next Saturday night, May 14th, at Thunder Hill Speedway.

To keep up with all the action check them out on the web at racethunderhillspeedway.com or on Facebook at Thunder Hill Speedway.
