Topeka – Last week the rain sat in on the final 3 days of the week and the dirt track racing at Heartland Park Topeka was cancelled.

This Sunday night July 10th the Big Time Bail Bonds Sunday Showdown will continue with the best IMCA Racing in the Midwest on Sunday night!

The Big Time Bail Bonds Sunday Showdown will have different gate and start times this week. Pit and spectator gates will open up at 4:30 p.m., hot laps will be at 6:30 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7:00 p.m. As the weather forecast is looking at warmer temps, HPT is looking to utilize the cooler evening temperatures.

What Happened The Last Race At Heartland Park…
Last week was a wild one. In the Cars 4 Less IMCA Stock Car Feature a last corner melee led Jim Powell to his 1st win of the season at Heartland Park. Danny Holt finally held off the competition as he won the BillsBuilt Race Cars IMCA Modified Feature. It was a veteran, Ricky Tanner, hauling in the win in the Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Hobby Stocks. 16 cars came to battle it out in the Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA N. Sport Mods and Bryce Frakes pulled off a last corner pass to win the feature. All 4 feature winners last week were first time winners at Heartland Park Topeka in 2016.

BillsBuilt Race Cars IMCA Modified Notes…
Danny Holt kept the streak alive as he became the 4th different feature winners this season in the Modified division.
Jordan Grabouski holds the top spot in the points right now, but Tom Charles and Steven Bowers Jr. are right in the hunt.
Former HPT regular competitor Heath Murry returned to the track last week. Murray entered last week in the Modified division and turned in a top 5 in his first IMCA event.
This week’s race will be the last ‘test and tune’ before the Big Time Bail Bonds Night at the Races on August 7th. The Modifieds will be racing for $650 to win and $110 to start on this special night.

This Week’s Driver to Watch… Tom Charles #81, Basehor, KS.

Tom Charles has been around for what seems to be an eternity in the local racing scene. He has won a lot of races over the years and he has been a great ambassador for the sport. Even though Charles is in the twilight of his career, he still wants to win races. Last week a 3rd place finish proves that Charles is just as competitive today as he was in the past. Keep an eye on Charles this week as he might look to improve on the finish he had from last week.

Cars 4 Less IMCA Stock Car Notes…
Last week’s race was a wild affair. When the dust settled, Jim Powell Jr., was the driver standing tall in victory lane. Powell is now the 6th different winner in just 6 races this season.
In the last few laps, Terry Blessing, flirted with a chance to score the win but unfortunately coming to the white flag blessing got a little high in turns 3 and 4 and lost momentum. He would end up 2nd on the night.
Ryan Phillips, driving for Jack Finan, put on the charge of the night as he started 10th in the A Main and drove all the way up to 3rd before the laps ran out.
At the top of the point standings currently is Brandon Conkwright. Conkwright has some company as Dominic Thyfault is right behind him just 17 points back.
It was announced early this past week that on August 7th the Cars 4 Less IMCA Stock Cars will be running the Cars 4 Less Stock Car Shootout. The race will pay the winner $600 and the last place car will earn $100. The purse continues to grow daily and could be a lot more than what is already posted.

This Week’s Driver To Watch… Steven Herrick #5K, Topeka, KS.

Steve Herrick is a former champion at Heartland Park Topeka. IMCA Racing is something new to Herrick and his crew and they are learning as fast as they can on what works and what doesn’t. Last week Herrick scored a top 5 after the wild finish last Sunday night. Even though this season has been up and down for Herrick he can still say that he is currently 3rd in the points and he has a feature win to his credit. Not to shabby. Lets see if last week’s finish will provide some momentum.

Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Northern Sport Mod Notes…

What a great race we had last week in the Sport Mods. Bryce Frakes took the top spot coming out of turn 4 and out raced the leader, Dan Charles, to the stripe.
The feature event last week went green, white, checkered. No yellow flags were found in the main event.
Gary Holthaus & Jaylen Wettengel tied for the ‘Hard Charger’ award last week. Holthaus started 12th and finished 5th, while Wettengel started 14th and finished 7th.
Just 14 points is all that separates the top 4 drivers in the point standings. Curtis Dreasher, the opening night feature winner, is on top of the standings but Austin Charles, Dan Charles and Dustin Thulin are all right there.
Just like the Stock Car ranks, the N. Sport Mods also have 6 different winners in just 6 races completed.

hpt july 10 2016 001Driver to Watch This Week… Gary Holthaus #50 Topeka, KS.

Gary Holthaus is a guy who has been around racing and cars for many years now. He stepped away from racing a little while back and after his kids were grown and out of the house he decided to jump back in to the water. Joining the IMCA N. Sport Mod division, Holthaus has taken his time figuring things out. After watching his 5th place finish a week ago, it looks like he is getting things figured out. Watch this week and see if he can’t improve on that finish from a week ago. His car seems to be handling well and he is proving that he is a good driver, this could provide a good combination.

Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Hobby Stock Notes…

Ricky Tanner took advantage of the track conditions last week and jumped out to the early lead. As the race went caution free, Tanner held off a hard charge by Dalton Ronnebaum to take home his 1st win at Heartland Park Topeka.
It was good to see opening night winner, Cody Williams, back out at Heartland Park. A few weeks ago Williams got upside down at another track. With a ton of damage Williams and friends got a new car back together and got him out last week. As he figures it out watch for him to become a front runner.
Dalton Ronnebaum continues to lead the point standings at Heartland Park. The top 4 are only 20 points a part.

Driver to Watch This Week… Ricky Tanner #14, Topeka, KS.

Last week I don’t think anyone was surprised more for his Hobby Stock Feature win than Ricky Tanner. Tanner is a guy that just wants to go out and race every night and have fun. It’s not all about wins and losses, for Tanner it’s just how much fun is he having. This attitude makes him a different breed from the drivers that are there to win, no matter what happens! It was nice to see Tanner in victory lane, but let’s keep an eye on him and see if he can back up the win!
