Mayetta, KS – The Oren Covert Memorial went off without a problem on Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway. Fans and racers were treated with something special all night long.

A superb fireworks display ended the night, but it was the fireworks provided by the Big Time Bail Bonds Clash on the Hill that had people cheering all night long.

The BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified Feature held a lot of excitement.

Ronnie Burkhardt did the same thing that he did last week to start this race off, he jumped out to the front. This time for Burkhardt there would be no mechanical issues and he would stay out front.

As Burkhardt stayed out front, Jordan Grabouski, the points leader, was making his way to the front of the field. A multiple time feature winner this season as Thunder Hill Speedway, Grabouski had been kept out of victory lane the previous 2 races and he was itching to get back.

Another drive also making his way to the front was Darron Fuqua. Fuqua was picking off cars one by one and moving forward during the main event.

Grabouski would battle with the leader, Burkhardt, and would take the top spot. Fuqua would follow suit and do the same moving into the 2nd spot. Grabouski had built a big lead and Fuqua would need some help in the form of a yellow flag. As 7 laps remained in the feature the yellow flag waved for an incident in turn 4.

The battle that the fans had wanted to see all season long at Thunder Hill Speedway was about to happen. Grabouski and Fuqua have been some of the hottest drivers in the Midwest over the past 5 to 10 years and now they were about to battle it out.

The green flag would fly and the two broke away from the field. Fuqua would mount a challenge on the restart and Grabouski answered the challenge by keeping the lead and extending it all the way to the checkered flag. It was a fun race to watch for the fans and it gave them a chance to see a new rivalry on display that could develop into more in the future.

Fuqua held on the the runner-up spot, Josh Blumer drove from 14th to 3rd in the feature, 4th went to Burkhardt and rounding out the top 5 was Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

The feature that carried the most excitement on Saturday night had to be the Bud’s Auto Service IMCA Stock Cars, as they were running for an extra $200 to win thanks to Jack Finan Racing.

All night long it seemed as 6 to 7 cars were right there at the front of the field, with each one having a chance at the win. Action on the track was fast and furious.

As it came down to crunch time. Jim Powell Jr. found himself taking the top spot. Matt Haid was on the move late.

The two drivers, who came into the night 1st and 2nd in the point standings, broke away from the pack on the final lap. Powell had a slight advantage as they took the white flag.

It would be Haid that got a good run coming out of turn 2 and it put Powell on the defensive. Haid went to the bottom of the track in 3 and to take his momentum away Powell went down to keep Haid from gaining any more ground. The move would benefit Powell.

Powell would come down as close as he could to Haid without touching him and it gave him the lead heading out of 4 to the checkers. Powell collected another Thunder Hill Speedway Feature win, or did he?

In post race tech inspection Powell was hit with an infraction. It took him from the lead to the tail of the field by the time the results were announced. Not only did the win get taken away, but Powell, after the race, would lose the points lead to Haid.

Haid would eventually be named the feature winner and he would pocket the $475 top prize.

2nd would go to the Brad Labonte who had a very good run Saturday night, Michael Pepper started 12th in the feature and raced his way to a 3rd place finish, another hard charger, Dominic Thyfault, finished 4th after starting 14th in the main and Mark Ronnebaum, who led early, would hang on for a top 5 in 5th place.

All season long there had not been a repeat winner in the JAG Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mod division. A few times it appeared that it was going to happen, but it hadn’t happened up to Saturday night.

One driver who has been having a solid season so far has been Brian Murphy.

Murphy didn’t get off to the greatest of starts but since the first race of the year he has done his home work and over the last 5 races it has shown. Saturday night was another night for Murphy to shine.

Starting 9th in the feature it didn’t take Murphy long to find the front of the pack. As he would build a lead up during the feature, a yellow flag would come out wiping out any advantage he made. As the yellows kept coming, the fight Murphy had to put up to hang on to the lead got a lot harder.

Kyle Stallbaumer and Shawn Harker, both also feature winners in the division this season, were right behind Murphy and ready to pounce if he made a mistake.

The restarts would continue to come and Murphy answered the challenge each and every time. A few times it might have been a benefit to Murphy as these two drivers would battle with each other giving Murphy more time to get away from the pack.

No matter the reason Murphy was just too strong on this night and he would become the 1st driver of the season to repeat at Thunder Hill Speedway in the Northern Sport Mod division.

K. Stallbaumer would win the battle for the runner-up spot, Harker would settle for 3rd, 4th went to the points leader, Austin Charles and rounding out the top 5 in 5th would be Aaron Hilderman, who started 14th in the feature.

A class that has had few repeat winners was the Casey’s General Store IMCA Hobby Stock division.

Saturday night as the field came to the green flag Larry Bouton Jr. would lead the field to the start in just his 2nd night out in a new hot rod he purchased recently.

It was a script that even Hollywood could have imagined that would unfold in front of the fans.

Bouton would lead the feature from flag to flag getting his 1st win of the 2016 season!

For a guy that was racing a car for just the 2nd time, Bouton looked like an old pro. Even when he would miss his marks he would recover and maintain the lead. Looking back on the race it was an impressive win considering Bouton hadn’t even logged a top 5 on the season at Thunder Hill.

The points leader Ryan Sutter would run out of laps chasing Bouton and settled for 2nd, 3rd would go to the reigning champ, Tyler Garst, 4th was Jaylen Wettengel and finishing 5th was Levi Henery.

The Big Time Bail Bonds Clash on the Hill continues next Saturday night, July 23rd, with a special appearance by the NCRA/NeSmith Chevrolet Late Models along with all the regular, weekly, IMCA classes.
