Kansas City, KS – A perfectly manicured race track and great night greeted the fans and racers of Lakeside Speedway on Kid’s Night at the Races!

A whopping 27 USRA Modifieds showed up to battle it out on Friday night.

Kerry Davis came into the night with the points lead, but Mark Schafman had been on a roll lately. What would happen on this night? Both drivers would start the feature 4th and 5th.

Aaron Marrant got the drop on the field and took the top spot, but Davis was on his way to the front of the field.

Like 2 classic gladiators, Davis and Marrant, would battle all the way around the speedway side by side. One would look to take the lead and the other would come fighting back.

Davis would wrestle the lead away before a yellow flag bunched up the field.

As the green flag waved again, Davis took off back out in the lead.

The race would continue on and Davis would get faster as it did. Davis could put his car on the low, middle or high line and it worked to perfection. His only worry to the checkered flag was navigating the lapped traffic he would encounter on the way to the finish.

Marrant finished 2nd, it was a strong run for 3rd place Justin Johnson, 4th would go to Nic Bidinger and Schafman put together a top 5 finish in 5th.

There was another great shootout in the USRA Stock Car main event.

Nate Barnes jumped out to the early lead, but Scotty Moore was with him the entire way. By lap 8 Moore had pulled dead even with Barnes at the stripe using the bottom of the race track. Barnes, on the other hand, was using the high side.

Just behind those 2 drivers were a couple of heavy hitters in Brett Heeter, the points leader, and Trevor Hunt, a multiple feature winner in 2016.

Heeter appeared to split the top 2 cars and take the lead, but a nasty yellow flag would halt his advance and put him back to 3rd on the restart.

On the restart the battle would end. Hunt, using the extreme high line, took the lead from Moore on the restart and wouldn’t be touched the rest of the way. It allowed him to close the gap on Heeter in the points and it put him in victory lane again! An impressive run considering that Hunt started 10th in the main event.

Heeter, who started 14th, would finish in the runner up spot, 3rd went to Barnes, 4th was Justin Seifert and Lucas Conley rounded out the top 5.

There was a Big Surprise in the USRA B Mod Feature event.

Matt Pugh and Jeff Elder brought the field to the green flag.

At the front of the field there was a lot of close racing. Elder took the lead but Tim Powell and Shad Turner were right there to apply pressure to the leader.

Elder answered the pressure and put together a little lead on the field.

A yellow flag would bunch the competition up and add a few more players to the front pack, Chad Clancy and Brad Smith. Both of those racers have multiple feature wins on the season.

As the race resumed it was Elder, again, holding on to the top spot.

Smith and Clancy would get by Turner and tried to run down Elder but it wouldn’t get done.

Elder capped off his perfect race with his 1st feature win at Lakeside Speedway in 2016.

Smith finished 2nd, 3rd would go to the point leader, Clancy, 4th was Turner and racing his way to 5th was Trevor Hunt.

The Grand National Feature saw a different racer than it had over the past couple of months.

Donnie Brown has been running strong all season long and Friday night he put together his best showing. From the start of the feature, Brown roared to the front and laid down some fast & consistent laps all race long. He would not be challenged on the way to the victory.

The battle for the championship between Tim Shields and Nick Newton waged on. Newton would just edge out Shields for the 2nd spot (gaining a few points), Shields finished 3rd, 4th would go to Jim Baker and Marshall Jewett scored the 5th position.

In the appearance of the ULMA Late Models it was a wild one at Lakeside Speedway on Friday night.

With 2 laps to go Jon Sheets blasted from 3rd to 1st on the high side of the speedway and held off the competition to the checkered flag.

Todd Shute finished in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Chris Smyser, Larry Ferris had a good run going from 10th to 4th in the feature and rounding out the top 5 was Aaron Marrant.

Action at Lakeside Speedway will resume next Friday night, August 12th, for Crystal Trenching/AMSOIL night at the races.
