Mayetta, KS – Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don’t! That’s what it must have felt like in Saturday night’s Bud’s Auto Service IMCA Stock Car Feature at Thunder Hill Speedway.

Dominic Thyfault took over the lead in the main event after Marvin Griffith Jr. and the early leader, Waylon Banks, made contact. Thyfault was in the right place at the right time.

Not only was he in the right place but he also capitalized on his good fortune by building up a lead. The only thing that would hinder him would be a yellow flag. As the yellow flag came out it erased the advantage he had built up over the competition.

Late in the race a yellow allowed Matt Haid, the points leader, to get a run at Thyfault. As the two drivers navigated the final turn Haid made his move. Haid used the banking in the turn to build up a good run coming out of turn 4, while Thyfault stuck to the high side were he was carrying his momentum.

Side by side the two racers came out of turn 4. It was going to be who got to the finish line first. It was hard to tell with the naked eye. Thunder Hill Speedway utilizes electronic scoring and it had by a few hundreths of a second Haid winning over Thyfault. The win allowed Haid to put more distance between him and the competition in the battle for the points title.

For yet another week the drivers in the Bud’s Auto Service IMCA Stock Cars put on another great race for the fans!

Thyfault would come home in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to a hard charging Brad Labonte, 4th was Marvin Griffith Jr. and Jim Powell rounded out the top 5!

Jordan Grabouski is on a quest. He is looking for the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified Track Championship at Thunder Hill Speedway and he is also looking to haul in another IMCA Modified National Championship.

Saturday night Grabouski took another big step in that direction.

Grabouski started outside the 4th row in the feature but it wasn’t long before he was knocking on the back door of Ricky Abrams Jr. Grabouski would get to the front of the pack and he would build up a lead.

Darron Fuqua, Tom Charles, Kyle Olberding and Steven Bowers Jr. tried to keep pace with Grabouski, but they would come up short on this night.

As the race wore on Grabouski would lap a majority of the field working his way to the win. It put him one more step closer to his goals!

Fuqua, last week’s winner, finished in the runner-up spot, 3rd was last year’s champ, Steven Bowers Jr., Kyle Olberding logged a 4th place finish and Tom Charles came home in the 5th position.

It must be nice to get the first win of the season. It must be even better if you get your 2nd win of the season the next week. That’s exactly what happened in the JAG Trucking IMCA N. Sport Mod Feature.

Jaylen Wettengel, the youngster from Topeka, took to the lead first. He would build up a nice advantage at the front of the field.

Several heavy hitters were behind him applying pressure lap after lap. Luke and Kyle Stallbaumer, Jacob Davis and Austin Charles were a few of the drivers that had a shot at him.

The toughest competitor for Wettengel had to be the yellow flag. Every time Wettengel established a lead the yellow flag would come out. At one point Wettengel must have wondered if the race was ever going to finish.

The race would get back going and with 5 laps remaining the pressure would intensify.

Jacob Davis, the winner from last week, made a run at Wettengel. It would be strong enough to take away the lead and put Davis in the top spot. Luke Stallbaumer also fought in this battle and would go to the 2nd spot. Wettengel started to fall back as the new leader took over.

Davis wasn’t out of the woods when he took over the lead. Both Stallbaumers, Luke and Kyle, were ready to try and take the lead away from Davis.

They would try and they would be unsuccessful as Davis would speed off to his 2nd straight win.

Luke Stallbaumer won the war for 2nd over his brother, Kyle, who finished 3rd, 4th went to Wettengel and Brian Murphy finished 5th.

A bunch of new faces showed up in the Casey’s General Store IMCA Hobby Stock Feature on Saturday night, but it would be a familiar driver going into Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane at the end of the night.

Larry Bouton Jr. became the early leader of this main event. Nicholas Ronnebaum moved from his 5th starting position in the feature to move quickly to the back bumper of Bouton.

The two drivers would battle for a short period, but as he has proved in the past Ronnebaum is as tough as they come. Five feature wins on the season, Ronnebaum was eyeing win #6 Saturday night.

Luke Ramsey was one of those new faces that raced on Saturday night. Ramsey gave Ronnebaum all that he wanted and more. Lap after lap Ramsey would stay right on his back bumper and with the white flag lap Ramsey would make his move.

Ramsey put a deep drive into turn 3 and began to wash up in turn 4. He was in deep and couldn’t back out now. The move Ramsey made was either going to work or it wasn’t.

As Ramsey’s car slid up the hill Ronnebaum had two choices, get off the gas and hope that he didn’t make contact or stay in the gas and hope that he didn’t make contact.

Ronnebaum took the latter of the two choices and it worked. Ronnebaum held off the dive bomb move and sprinted home to win #6 on the year.

Three new faces would highlight the top 5 finishers. Ramsey was 2nd, Tom Meyers drove from 12th to 3rd, 4th went to Larry Bouton Jr. and Andy Davison raced his way from 11th to 5th.

Action will return to Thunder Hill Speedway next Saturday night, August 20th, as the regular weekly classes will be joined by the NCRA/NeSmith Chevrolet Late Models.
