Topeka – Heartland Park Topeka’s Dirt Track revs back up this Sunday night, August 21st, for the 9th Big Time Bail Bonds Sunday Showdown.

All of the classes will be back in action Sunday night! The BillsBuilt Race Cars IMCA Modifieds, Cars 4 Less IMCA Stock Cars, Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Northern Sport Mods and the Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Hobby Stocks are all ready to battle it out.

This week’s theme is staying with all the points battles that are still up for grabs in each class. Two points races are left on the schedule and the championships have yet to be decided. It’s time for some drivers to make a statement, if they want to take home the championship hardware.

What Happened The Last Race At Heartland Park…
Last week saw some great racing action. A new face, Jeremy Chambers, drove into victory lane with his 1st win in the IMCA Modifieds. Dominic Thyfault blasted to the win in the IMCA Stock Car Feature. Another first time winner, Chris Lierz, took home the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock main event. Curtis Dreasher pulled off a late race pass to seal the win in the IMCA N. Sport Mods.

BillsBuilt Race Cars IMCA Modified Notes…
What seemed to look like an easy run to the championship for Jordan Grabouski has now become a 3 way shootout for the title. Last week Grabouski suffered heavy damage in an early race yellow. Steven Bowers Jr. and Tom Charles were able to finish 2nd and 3rd on the night. Their good fortune and Grabouski’s bad luck have shaken up the points. Bowers is now the new point leader with Grabouski and Charles sitting 1 point back in the race. Danny Holt is still in the hunt just 25 points back. The last 2 races should be good ones!
Jeremy Chambers became the 6th different winner in just 8 races this season.
Hats off to Dakota Foster, a B Mod racer in the area, he gave it a go with the Modifieds and by the end of the night finished 7th after starting 15th.
Another driver, Scott Brown, finally returned to action after a long layoff due to motor issues, finished 5th on the night.

After a little bit of a hiatus, Jared Rogers, returned to Heartland Park Topeka last week. Rogers started 11th and drove to a solid 6th place finish. Keep an eye on him this week. Getting back behind the wheel should have gotten him ready to go for this week. Rogers should be somewhere towards the front this week.

Cars 4 Less IMCA Stock Car Notes…
Dominic Thyfault became the first driver to repeat in the Stock Car division. It might have come at a high cost though. Thyfault discovered engine issues and it could sideline him for the final 3 races. A huge blow to a very hot driver at the moment.
If Thyfault can’t make it the last 2 points races it should give Brandon Conkwright, the current points leader, some breathing room. Conkwright has a 23 point lead over Thyfault and 35 point lead over Steve Herrick.
Last week Eric Weyer turned in his best finish of the season coming home in the runner up spot. Not bad considering he is running on a limited schedule in 2016.
Shane Wettengel was the ‘Hard Charger’ last week. Wettengel started 9th and finished 3rd.

This Week’s Driver To Watch… Shane Wettengel #91J, Topeka, KS.

Shane Wettengel has had a long history of wins at Heartland Park Topeka’s Dirt Track. Slowly he has been coming back this year racing a limited schedule in the Stock Car class. He is the Crew Chief and mentor for his son, Jaylen, who races in the Sport Mod and Hobby Stock division. So you can see why his schedule is limited. Last week’s 3rd place showing tells me Wettengel still has it. Keep an eye on him this week and see if he can climb even higher.

Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Northern Sport Mod Notes…
It took 2 tries at a green, white, checkered finish in the Sport Mod feature, but wow wasn’t the last one a dandy? Curtis Dreasher stunned the crowd by sneaking by the leader Matthew Crowell for the win. It was another exciting finish at Heartland Park Topeka this season.
With the win Dreasher joins Dustin Thulin as the only drivers to repeat as feature winners this season.
There is still an awesome points battle going on in this class too. Dreasher heads into the final 2 points races with a 6 point lead over 2nd place Austin Charles. A dark horse in the running is still Dustin Thulin as he is 24 points back behind the leader.
The Sport Mod division was the popular division last week as 18 racers checked in to battle it out.

Driver to Watch This Week… Derek Huffman #1, Topeka, KS.

Huffman has to be one of the candidates for most improved driver this season at Heartland Park Topeka. Currently he sits 4th in the points and he is coming off a top 5 finish from a week ago. Look for the #1 to be at or near the front of the pack Sunday night.

Jersey Mike’s Subs IMCA Hobby Stock Notes…
Chris Lierz was the 2nd different feature winner last week to visit victory lane. Lierz started 8th on the grid but made his way to the top spot. Not only was Lierz the winner, but he was also the ‘Hard Charger’ on the night.
It was a solid first trip to Heartland Park for Larry Bouton. Bouton started 9th in the feature and drove to a 3rd place finish.
Jaylen Wettengel saw one of his best finishes in the Hobby Stock ranks. Wettengel finished runner-up in last week’s feature.
Dalton Ronnebaum, the points leader, went out early in the feature and finished 10th. With 2 races to go Ronnebaum leads Tyler Garst & Jaylen Wettengel by just 14 points and Alex Boyden by 15 points! This class could have the wildest race to the championship.

Driver to Watch This Week… Tyler Garst #53T, Topeka, KS.

If there is a driver that can make up a 14 point spread in 2 races it just might be Tyler Garst. Garst has a victory under his belt this year and he has suffered some bad luck along the way. Just think if his luck would have been better he might be leading the points heading into these last 2 races. Keep an eye on Garst this week (and next) and see if he isn’t racing up front and in the hunt for the championship.
