Mayetta, KS – Someone once said that it doesn’t matter how many laps you lead during a race, if it’s not he last lap it doesn’t matter!

This was evident at Thunder Hill Speedway on Saturday night.

In the BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modified A Main it was Tom Charles jumping out to the early advantage.

With a host of good cars in the field it would be only a matter of time before Charles would be challenged at the front of the pack.

Darron Fuqua would work his way up from his 9th starting spot in the feature to take over the lead. Once at the top spot Fuqua clicked off several laps and creating a nice sized lead. An early challenge from David Murray never materialized but a late race yellow with 3 laps to go would change everything.

Last Sunday night points leader, Jordan Grabouski destroyed his race car at another area track. During the week he acquired a new car and Saturday night at Thunder Hill Speedway was the maiden voyage. In the heat race it didn’t look like Grabouski had it figured out yet. In the feature it was more of the same, he didn’t look comfortable. Just past the halfway point Grabouski began to pick up some steam and looked like the Grabouski of old. Then the yellow happened.

When the yellow came out Grabouski was in the 2nd spot and Fuqua was the leader. Two of the best drivers in the Midwest would battle it out for a green, white, checkered finish.

As the field went green Fuqua and Grabouski went at it. The two would stay glued to each other lap after lap until the final lap. In the final turn on the final lap, Grabouski made a hard dive to the middle of the track. Fuqua would keep his line on the high side. Grabouski would crowd Fuqua at the top of the track. Fuqua would try to force Grabouski to back out of the gas, but neither one would give an inch.

As the drag race finished at the flag stand it was Grabouski by half a car length over Fuqa, who led a majority of the laps!

Grabouski with the win continued his run to another track championship at Thunder Hill Speedway and, more importantly, an IMCA National Championship.

Fuqua finished a very close 2nd, Steven Bowers Jr. raced his way to a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Kyle Olberding and Randy Wilson logged a top 5 finish in 5th.

The NCRA/NeSmith Late Model Series charged into Thunder Hill Speedway on Saturday night and just like the Modified Feature it was a last lap pass for the winner.

Chris Kratzer was in command of the feature all night long. Lap after lap Kratzer put the competition in his rear view mirrow. Unfortunately for Kratzer lapped traffic would come into play.

As lapped traffic loomed for the leader, Dusty Leonard and Lyle Shepard made up the distance to the leader and looked to have the upper hand. Then another yellow flag would fly forcing a green, white, checkered finish.

On the restart Leonard knew that it was going to be now or never to make a move. Kratzer looked as if he would run back away from Leonard, but this time it was different. Leonard found a line that kept him in the hunt.

Both racers would battle side by side around the track. Kratzer on the white flag would get into the front stretch wall and sparks flew, but both drivers would sail off into turn 1. Leonard would make his move and wrestle the top spot away from Kratzer.

Kratzer would try to run him back down, they were side by side as they came out of turn 4 and at the stripe it would be Leonard getting the win by a few feet.

Kratzer finished 2nd, 3rd went to Shepard, Delbert Smith finished in the 4th spot and rounding out the top 5 was Jeremy Bishop.

The hottest driver at Thunder Hill Speedway kept his hot streak alive on Saturday night in the JAG Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mods.

Tim Stallbaumer ran one of the best races of his young career. Tim Stallbaumer jumped to the front of the field and kept everyone at bay for a majority of the race. Unfortunately for Stallbaumer, Jacob Davis still hasn’t come down from his high 2 weeks ago after getting his 1st win of his career in the Sport Mods.

Davis took his time getting to Tim Stallbaumer. A series of yellow flags would keep his attack from happening right away.

Late in the race Davis found his groove and would go by Stallbaumer. This time Davis would bring Chad Shaw with him to the front as well.

Shaw, in his 1st appearance this season, would push Davis all the way to the checkered flag. In the end Davis would pull off the ‘Hat Trick’ and gained his 3rd straight win.

Shaw finished in the runner-up spot, Tim Stallbaumer logged one of his best finishes in 3rd, 4th was the point leader, Austin Charles and Jeremy Pittsenbarger came home in the 5th spot.

The Bud’s Auto Service IMCA Stock Car Feature saw a battle of 2 heavy weights at the front of the field.

Matt Haid and Kyle Vanover gave the fans a bunch to cheer for on Saturday night.

Haid, the points leader and multiple time feature winner at Thunder Hill, raced his way to the front of the field. He would hold the lead as the others behind him tried to make their way up the ladder.

Vanover would take the lead and began his sprint to the finish.

As Vanover began to put a lead on the field, it looked like Haid’s chance for another win was gone. Late in the race Haid was running at the top of the track. In turn 4 Haid would come in contact with Jim Powell Jr. The contact would send him spinning.

Haid would get new life as Powell was black flagged for rough driving by track officials. This call would put Haid back in the 2nd spot on the speedway. There was still a chance.

The race resumed and battle for the top spot fired back up.

In the end it was Vanover holding off Haid by a slim margin.

Haid, who maintained the points lead, finished in 2nd, 3rd went to Hank Thompson, Colton Miller rebounded to finish 4th and rounding out the top 5 was Steven Corning.

One feature that saw a dominating run was the Casey’s General Store IMCA Hobby Stock division.

Levi Henery started out in the lead of this feature event. Henery showed signs of just how good he is as he worked the high line to perfection and held off all the early challenges that were thrown his way.

One challenger, Jesse Vanlaningham, was also displaying some great driving ability and speed out on the track. Starting in the 12th spot Vanlaningham blasted to the front of the field and took over the top spot.

At the top spot it was all Vanlaningham as he would take the win and became another new face heading into Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane.

Nicholas Ronnebaum finished in the 2nd spot, Henery would come home 3rd, 4th went to Ryan Sutter and Travis Darnall brought home a top 5 in 5th.

Next Saturday night August 27 will be Championship Night at Thunder Hill Speedway. All the points champions will be crowned in the each of the 4 IMCA classes. Make plans to be there now!!!
