Pair of hometown drivers victorious at Wakeeney

By Mike Hughes – WAKEENEY, KS (April 22)—After a rainout the previous week, racing action returned to Wakeeney (KS) Speedway on Sunday, April 22, with the regular four classes in action, and two hometown drivers made their way to the winner’s circle.

In the IMCA Modified A-feature, ‘The Wichita Lineman’ Randy Wilson took the early lead until Wakeeney’s Kyle Rohleder took control on lap 3. Rohleder was able to hold off a loaded field the rest of the distance in the 20-lap race to score his first win of the season. Rodger Peck finished second, followed by Michael Martin, Wilson, and ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill. Heat race winners were Brian Calhoon, Corey Lagroon, Mike Petersilie, and Hill. Jason Schoenberger and ‘Maniac’ Matt Fabrizius were first to the checkers in the two B-features.

The IMCA Stock Car feature saw Jason Davis drive off to an early lead in the 20-lap event. But hometown driver Terry Cunningham worked his way to second by the halfway mark and made the winning pass on lap 14 to score the victory in the caution free race. ‘The Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs made a late charge but came up a half a car-length short and settled for second, trailed by Davis, ‘Sweet’ Wheat Lippelmann and B.J. Wagoner. Austin Carter and Cunningham won the two heat races.

The IMCA Northern Sport Mod A-main got off to a rough start with an 11 car pileup in turn 3 on the opening lap. However all but Tyler Watts and Kaid Calhoon were able to return. When the green flag waved again, Michael Wadel of Garden City jumped out to the lead and led all 15 laps to make his way to victory lane. Clinton Hockersmith, ‘Wild’ Willie Wynn, ‘Flyin’ Bryan Lariviere, and Justin Dietz rounded out the top five. Wadel, Lariviere and Blaine Walt were victorious in the heat races, while Daniel Gottschalk topped a 12-car field in the B-feature.

Tyrel Smith led the first 2 laps of the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature before the first caution waved on lap 3 when Jason McIntyre stalled. After the restart, ‘Bam Bam’ Cody Graham of Hays passed Smith to take the lead. Graham was able to hold off the field through a couple more caution periods to find his way to the winner’s circle. Jeromy Wagner got by Smith for second, with Jacob Crowell and Cody Ghumm completing the top five. Heat race victors were Smith and Graham.

Mike’s Place of Wakeeney was the evening’s race sponsor.
