Great Stories Surround Race #5 at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway

After a series of runner-up finishes Darron Fuqua finally scored win #1 of 2012. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Topeka, KS – Heading in to Saturday night’s races at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway, it has been an exciting season to say the least. Saturday marked the 5th different winner in the Washburn Tech Modifieds, Darron Fuqua, the Super 8 @ Forbes Landing Factory Stock main event went a driver, that now has, three wins to his credit, Steven Goodman won a photo finish feature in the Whiteline CDL Training B Mod division and in the Pure Stock division Jesse Shotts drove a proven winner to victory lane.

Darron Fuqua has a handful of 2nd place finishes on the season. Four races into the season, Darron, who had 11 wins last season, has yet to get on the board in the 2012 season. Scratch that last one of the list, Fuqua dominated the Modified feature event on the way to his 1st win of the season.

For weeks it seemed like Fuqua had not found his winning rhythm from last year. He might have tapped back into it Saturday night at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. Second place is not where Fuqua wants to be, he wants to win as many races as he can before he has to hang up the driven suit. For the 2nd straight week, Fuqua jumped out into the lead. Would he be able to hold on or was he just blowing smoke? Also in the past week, Fuqua would jump out into the easy lead. A yellow came out, wiping out the lead that Fuqua built up.

In the feature event, Fuqua did jump out to the early lead. A darn yellow flag flew just after the half way point. Fuqua would not make the mistake of giving up the lead this week. After the restart the competition wasn’t that close to Fuqua.

Josh Everhart put some confidence in his race program as he finished 2nd, 3rd went to Grant Junghans, former track champ in the Modifieds, Ryan Phillips raced his way to a solid 4th place finish. Rounding out the top 5 was Justin Johnson.

Steven Goodman goes to the winners circle with a B Mod Main win. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

The White Line CDL Training B Mod Feature saw Steven Goodman edge out Ethan Isaacs by a matter of inches at the start finish line. It was by far the most exciting race of the night.

In the early portion of the race it was 2x feature winner, Mike Higley, motoring to the front of the field like he has done so many times this year, but for the third straight time Higley was jinxed as he continues to take the lead only to have his car develop a problem that forces him out of the race. As he dropped out, his little brother, Steven Goodman, inherited the lead.

As the race got back to the green flag Goodman and Isaacs begin to go at it at the front of the field. The two driver started on the front row and by the end of the night they were going to finish there. As the two exited turn 4 it appeared to be a dead heat. At the flag stand it was still a tough call. Both racers sat waiting on the track to see who track officials would deem the winner. After a few seconds, Steven Goodman was informed on his Raceiver that he had won the race by a very slim margin over Isaacs.

Dave Samuels, former Factory Stock Champ, had his best run of the season going from 11th to 3rd, in the 4th position was the B Feature winner, who started in the 21st position, Terry Bivins and rounding out the top 5 was Rich Boyden, who started 15th.

From top to bottom it was one of the most entertaining races for the 2012 season.

In the Pure Stock class, Jesse Shotts drove to victory lane for the first time in 2012. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

The Casey’s General Store Pure Stock feature watched Jesse Shotts drive to a feature win in a car that spent last season in victory lane 73% of the time.

Shotts, no stranger to victory lane at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway, has logged wins in the Pure Stock division as well as the B Mod division in previous years. Racing for the Henery family, Shotts has been waiting to get into victory lane during the 2012 season, but it has taken a little more time to get used to his new ride. Trouble for the competition is that Shotts is feeling good about the upcoming races during the Super Saturday Showdown Series.

Early in the evening Shotts picked off a heat race win and the car was feeling better than ever. In the feature it didn’t take long for the black #97 to shoot to the point position, and just like days of old drive off to victory without a challenge.

Last week’s winner, Randal Schiffelbein Jr. continued his impressive rookie campaign with a 2nd place finish, 3rd went to AJ Christian, who started the night as the points leader, 4th was Jimmy Millard and Bryon Glotzbach turned in a valiant effort finishing in the 5th position.

Terry Schmidt celebrates in victory lane after win #3! Reed Bros. Racing Photos

A week ago Steve Herrick drove to victory lane in the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock main event. It was the first time in 3 weeks that the class had a winner other than Terry Schmidt. Saturday night, Terry Schmidt showed that he isn’t just going to be a one-hit wonder as he made it look easy roaring to win #3 on the season.

Schmidt’s power was evident at the beginning of the feature. He would flex his muscle and get past the two starters on the front row, Tyson Young and Matt Field, within the first few laps. From there he extended his lead lap after lap. A potential battle came into play after a yellow flag would wipe out his lead. Last week’s feature winner, Steve Herrick, had the chance to make a run but couldn’t get the job done late in the race. Schmidt once again extended the lead on the way to win #3.

Herrick would have another strong finish in 2nd, 3rd was the opening night feature winner, Jeff Miller, Matt Field finished in the 4th position and in 5th was Tyson Young.

The Super Saturday Showdown Series takes a break next week as the Dollar General NHRA Summer Nationals blow in to Heartland Park Topeka.
