Agler, Donaldson, Bruner & O’Neal Shine At Lakeside Speedway

Cody Agler drives to his 3rd win of the season at Lakeside Speedway. PictureMeRacing.Com

Kansas City, KS – Everything went off without a hitch on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway. It was just another night that saw a ton of fans and 92 racers checked in for Kenny’s Tile Night at the races. Metro Sports was also on hand to deliver the 1st of 11 broadcasts of the racing action from Lakeside Speedway. All of these different variables provided for some great racing action on the track.

Mark Hoover (Maryville, Mo) and Joe Cobb (Kansas City) would bring the Modified field down for the start of the feature on Friday night. Hoover would get the early drop on the field as he went to the point position early in the race. Austin Siebert (Grandview, Mo) would be the next driver to take the top spot.

Siebert’s major sponsor on his car, Kenny’s Tile, was also the race night sponsor at Lakeside Speedway. It looked as if the stars were lining up to put him in victory lane at the end of the night, but someone forgot to tell Cody Agler (Emporia).

Agler worked to the inside of Siebert coming out of turn number 4. The two would stay side by side as the entered turn 1. Agler would gain a slight advantage exiting turn 2 and by the time they completed the current lap, Agler was in the top spot. He continued to flex his muscle once in the lead. Agler would run away from the competition and build an insurmountable lead over the rest of the competition.

The feature event would end up going flag to flag without a single caution lap. Agler would take the checkered flag for the 3rd time this season. Currently, Agler and the runner-up, Tim Karrick (Basehor) have had a monopoly on winning this season. As Agler won last night, the two drivers have won 7 of the 8 races completed in 2012.

Shad Badder (Oak Grove, Mo) had a strong outing on his 1st night at Lakeside this season. In the first 3 laps, Badder raced from his 15th starting position into 5th. On lap number 9 he would find his way into the 2nd spot. A late race pass by Karrick would leave Badder with an impressive 3rd place finish. Darron Fuqua (Mayetta), the only other driver besides Agler and Karrick to win a feature this season, raced his way to a 4th place finish. ‘Bubba’ Harvey (Kansas City) would come home in the 5th position to round out the top 5.

In the past names like Kerry Davis, Gene Claxton, and Nic Bidinger have dominated in the Grand National division while running to titles. Could this be the year that Gary Donaldson (Liberty, Mo.) follows in their footsteps? Friday night he took another step in the direction of those former champions. Donaldson would get his 5th win of the season on Friday night and it would be one that he had to earn the hard way.

Steve Dibben (Smithville, Mo) and Marshall Jewett (Garnder) got this feature underway from the front row. After the drop of the green flat it wouldn’t be long before a familiar face, Tim Shields (Kansas City, Mo) took over at the front of the field.

Shields, a multiple time feature winner in past seasons at Lakeside, has been struggling in the 2012 race season. For a moment Friday night, it appeared that Shields had shook his bad luck and looked to be driving off to victory. Jewett would come back and take the lead from Shields. Jewett, a feature winner this season in the Grand National and Factory Stock classes, drove the high line lap after lap. In what would turn out to be one of the best Grand National features of the season, several drivers were slicing and dicing behind Jewett for position.

Donaldson began to march to the front late in the race. He watched as cars in front moved through multiple grooves, while gaining positions ahead of him. It helped him in finding the fast way around the track. As the laps wound down, Donaldson moved into the 2nd spot. He set up a showdown with Jewett. Jewett was content running the top of the track, it would be a move that would be fatal for Jewett. Jewett would push up next to the wall late in the race and it would be all that was needed for Donaldson to gain the upper hand. Donaldson would motor on to his 5th win of the season. The win would keep him in the points lead for another week and it pushed him closer to following in the footsteps of past Grand Nationals Champions.

Jewett finished in the 2nd spot, getting his highest finish of the season in 3rd was Shields, Darren Kling (Basehor) raced to a 4th place finish and Jim Baker (Kansas City) continued his solid performance in 2012 with a 5th place finish.

Barry Soetoro/John O'Neal Jr. drove to the win in the Factory Stock division. PictureMeRacing.Com

In the Factory Stock feature event the fans were wondering all night long, who is Barry Soetoro? For the 2nd straight week, Soetoro, hailing from Parts Unknown, continued to show off his driving skills at Lakeside Speedway. A week ago he finished with a top 10, Friday night Soetoro was on the move early in the main event.

Once again the overall feel in the Factory Stock class is one of great competition. At the drop of the green flag fans were treated by several laps of side by side racing from the entire field. On Friday night 4 and 5 wide racing was the norm in this feature. The battle got started with Cliff Hedges Jr. (Kansas City, Mo) getting the drop on the field.

Soetoro would make his move going into turn one for the lead. He would follow the middle groove as he went passed Hedges for the lead on the 4th lap. The feature would stay green until lap 9. It would be the first of a series of yellows to plaque the main event. The first restart would have a significant impact on the outcome of the feature.

Scotty Moore (Kansas City) and Hedges were the first row behind the leader on the restart. Hedges made a hard push for the lead heading into turn 1 and it appeared as if he was going to take the lead. In the middle of the turn Hedges car jumped out from under him and he would spin. In doing so he collected Brett Heeter (Kansas City), Caleb McClellan (Kansas City, Mo) & Jason Ryun (Kansas City, Mo). All cars that were in contention before this spin occurred.

One the action got back to green flag racing, Soetoro was the class of the field. He made all the right moves and the right moments and drove to the win in just his 2nd race ever. Or was it? As Soetoro climbed out of his car in victory lane, it was revealed that Soetoro was actually John O’Neal Jr. racing under an alias. O’Neal a longtime racer in the Kansas City area, jumped in to the ride of Jim Conley’s a few weeks ago to help him out. O’Neal, a former Lakeside Speedway feature winner in multiple classes, showed Conley just how fast his car would go. Fast enough to win a feature. The fans cheered on O’Neal/Soetoro as he accepted his trophy after the win.

Jay Barnes (Kearney, Mo) fell back in the race only to fight his way back to a strong runner-up finish, Justin Seifert (Kansas City) completed the feature in 3rd, 4th was Marshall Jewett (Gardner) and racing from 17th to 5th in the main was Nate Barnes (Kearney, Mo).

Terry "Boom Boom" Bruner took the lead with 4 laps to go and won the B Mod Feature. PictureMeRacing.Com

The B Mod feature was shaping up to be a battle royal. Gene Claxton (Kansas City, Mo), Nick Newton (Kansas City), Terry Bruner (Sugar Creek, Mo), Jake Richards (Kansas City), Mike Higley (Tecumseh), Aaron Marrant (Orrick, Mo) and a first time racer, Brad Smith (Belton, Mo) were just a few of several big names that highlighted the competition.

At the start of the race it was surprise racer going to the lead. Luke Nieman (Nortonville) put together a strong run on Friday night. He jumped out to the early lead and maintained it for more than 1/2 of the race. Nieman, would actually, lead all the way up to lap 11. A late race yellow would bunch the field up once gain and all the aforementioned racers were right behind Nieman on the restart waiting to make a move.

On the restart it was Bruner that would get the best run at Nieman. Coming out of turn two Bruner got to the inside of Nieman and down the backstretch took Nieman’s line away from him. Bruner would gain the lead on lap 12 and when took the lead, the flood gates opened for others as positions started changing rapidly all over.

Bruner would hang on for the final 3 laps and pick up the win. It would be a satisfying night for Bruner as his car builder, Newton finished 2nd and his teammate, Smith finished in the 3rd place position. It was a podium sweep for Team Cheetah Chassis.

Nieman held on for a strong 4th place finish and Richards rounded out the top 5 in 5th.

Lakeside Speedway gets back to racing action next Friday night, June 15th for PictureMeRacing Night at The Races.
