Rogers Hits Milestone, First Modified Feature Win of His Career

It was a first for Jared Rogers when he won the Modified A Main. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Topeka, KS – It had to be one of ‘those’ nights at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway Saturday night. I am sure that everyone has had one of ‘those’ nights before. Those nights are the ones that if something could go wrong, it will. The fans and employees at the track on Saturday night had to feel like this was one of those nights. When all of the weird stuff ended, there was some great racing and great racing moments on the track.

Jared Rogers (Berryton) moved into the modified division a few years ago. It’s always tough moving into a new class, but the Modified division is extremely competitive and not very kind to rookies. During that time period, Rogers has taken a very pro-active approach. He and his team learned about the class, the cars and how to race one of these beasts. All of his patience paid off tonight as Rogers would score his 1st career win in a Modified feature.

Jared’s night would get off to a good start in his heat race. He garnered a 3rd place finish, but he started in the 8th position and he had to run against some stiff competition in the heat.

Rogers and Jay Bailey (Lyndon) would start on the front row. Bailey got the early jump on the field and held the lead until a right rear would blow out, ending his night. Rogers was there to pick up where Bailey left off. From that point on it was all Rogers. He would hold off the feature winner from last week, Darron Fuqua (Mayetta). Rogers thought that this win would come earlier, but to just get a win has put this young driver on cloud 9.

Fuqua finished in the 2nd spot, 3rd went to Kerry Davis (Parkville, MO), Lyle Shepard (Manhattan) continued his streak of consecutive top 5’s finishing in the 4th position and Grant Junghans finished in the 5th position.

After Rogers secured his 1st win the other feature events saw repeat winners in 2012.

The Factory Stock A Main was shapping up to be a wild one. Steve Herrick (Topeka) and Terry Schmidt (Nortonville) brought the field down to the green flag.

Schmidt, who has won 4 features before Saturday night, shot to the front like a cannon. Schmidt would blast past the field and take the lead on lap 1. From there it was business as usual, Schmidt would win going away for the 5th time this season. Schmidt is definitely one fast character. From the outside front row, he made the most of it. Several yellow flags, including a green, white, checkered late in the race. It was another task that Schmidt was up too.

Herrick would mount a charge at Schmidt, but nothing positive was ever gained. Herrick would finish in 2nd, last week’s feature winner, Zach Henery (Topeka), put up a good fight and drove to a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Jeff Miller (Topeka) and in the 5th position it was Clint Hedge (Bonner Springs).

Jesse Shotts pulls the hat trick with his 3rd win of 2012. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

There was a lot of entertainment value in tonight’s Casey’s General Store Pure Stock feature event. A majority of the feature was spent watching Barry Richardson (Topeka) melt down during the race. A melt down that the finds and track officials would rather forget.

Once the race got back underway, it was Jesse Shotts (Topeka) taking the early lead. The two time feature winner was looking on for win #3 on the season. The car that Shotts is driving is the same car that won 16 features a year ago. After coming out to a slow start to the season, it’s safe to say that Mr.Shotts is likes this new feeling of winning week after week.

Randal Schiffelbein Jr. (Tecumseh, KS) had a good run, a run that was strong enough to gain him a runner-up finish and maintain the points lead. Byron Glotzbach (Topeka) made some strong moves during the main event. He would come home in the 3rd position. In the 4th position it was Tyler Garst getting one of his best finishes of the 2012 race season. Driving from 14th to 5th in the race, was Steve Stuart (Osage City, KS).

The B Mod feature event also carried some intrigue with it on Saturday night.

Two time track champion in the Factory Stocks, Dave Samuels (Tecumseh), is currently a rookie in the B Mod division. His season has been filled with ups and downs. Saturday night looked like it was going to be huge night for Samuels as he launched himself into the lead. At the top spot he would hold on to the lead through a couple of yellows. One driver keeping pace with Samuels was the current points leader of the division, Ethan Isaacs (Bonner Springs).

Mike Higley, on the other hand, was working his way through traffic. He would come up on Samuels and Isaacs after a restart. Higley would have a decision to make. Instead of choosing option A, B or C. Higley went with D. That meant he was going to split the two racers and take the lead coming out of turn 2. The feature was exciting and so was the bold move by Higley. It would work and instead of just a spot forward, he came out with the lead.

Last week Higley had to work and missed racing at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway last week. It dropped him to 6th in the points. Nothing would get him down as he continued to climb back to the front of the standings. On this night, Higley would speed off to win number 3 of the season.

Samuels, scored his highest finish to date in 2nd, 3rd went to Mike Eisenhut (Topeka), the ‘Spiderman’ Steven Goodman (Meriden) drove from 14th to 4th in the event and finishing with another top 5 finish is Lucas Isaacs (Bonner Spings).
