Fuqua Pockets $1000 Win In A Borrowed Ride!

Darron Fuqua #5K works past the leader, Steven Bowers Jr. to win the $1000 Modified A Main! Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Topeka, KS – The fans, drivers and sponsors all braved the heat as they came out to watch some great racing and celebrate the life of a fallen racer, Steve Bowers Sr., at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway on Saturday night.

Extra money for the racers and candy and prizes for the kids were just a few things that went on during the event. The most important part had to be that everyone had a great time once again.

The Washburn Tech Modified feature had the most money on the line as $1,000 would go to the winner. Fans and friends of Steven Bowers Jr. were excited as the feature rolled out onto the speedway. Steven Bowers Jr., son of the late Steve Bowers Sr., was sitting on the front row. This season has been a tough one for the young Bowers. Heading into race number 12 on the season, he had yet to win a single feature. A characteristic that wasn’t like the former track champion at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway.

Darron Fuqua was the other competitor on the front row. Fuqua came into the night having won a feature on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS. Could he get win #2 on the weekend? The odds were not in his favor as he started off the night with engine problems in the hot lap session. Lucky for him, Jason Keim, another competitor in the Modified division, had a car for him to borrow.

Bowers rocketed out to the early lead in the Modified feature. It appeared that Bowers had put his sub par season to rest. He would extend his lead and began to look like the Bowers of old.

Fuqua didn’t let Bowers get to far away, as he sat in the 2nd position for most of the race. He was doing an admirable job driving a car that he had never been inside of until just a few hours before. As he kept pace with Bowers the fireworks were about to start.

Lapped traffic laid ahead of Bowers as he maintained his lead. While Bowers was rolling into the lapped cars, Fuqua was chopping into the lead that Bowers had put together. Three cars raced side by side in front of Bowers. It was all the help that Fuqua would need to make his run at the leader. Coming off the inside of the leader Fuqua was able to get the lead from Bowers as they went by the flag stand. Fuqua would then use a lapped car to his advantage, and he made sure that Bowers would be pinned behind them as they came to the white flag. From there Fuqua would hold onto the lead for the win.

It was Fuqua’s 3rd win of the season. The most in the division.

Bowers finished in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Tom Grist, 4th was Kerry Davis and Richie Gustin rounded out the top 5 in 5th.

Ethan Isaacs has led the White Line CDL Training B Mod point standings for a majority of the season. The main reason for him holding onto the points lead was the fact that Isaacs is always finishing in the top 5. A stat that also stuck out for the racer from Bonner Springs is that he had never won a feature in 2012. After Saturday night Isaacs can mark that off the list of things to do as he won the B Mod A Main.

It didn’t take long for Isaacs to get the drop on the field. He would take the lead at the start of the feature and he held on to the lead for the entire 15 laps of the feature. It was a great win that came on a great night. Isaacs earned an extra $200 on top of $400 that the feature was to pay on Saturday night.

Curtis Dreasher, also had a strong run on the night, he finished in the 2nd spot and applied pressure to Isaacs all night long, 3rd went to Jeremy Chambers, last week’s winner, Dustin Thulin, finished in the 4th spot and Nick Newton blasted to a 5th place finish after starting 17th in the A.

Jason Billups won an extra $100 in the B Mod Main by being named the Full Circle Race Bodies hard charger. Billups started 24th and finished 9th in the main event.

For the first time in 4 weeks, Terry Schmidt didn’t start on the front row of the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock feature event. The outcome wasn’t any different, Schmidt drove to his 9th win of the season. He currently leads all drivers, in all divisions, for the most wins on the season.

Tyson Young got out early with the lead and Zach Henery followed in the 2nd spot. In just a couple of laps, Schmidt had moved into the 3rd spot and began to mount an assault on the top two.

Schmidt was able to drive past both spots and took over the lead. Once in the lead, Schmidt checked out on the field. With a heavy right foot and a car that handles like a dream, Schmidt has become the dominant racer at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway.

Young would hold on to finish 2nd, 3rd went to Henery, 4th was Eric Weyer and rounding out the top 5 was Frank Jaynes.

Extra money was scored by the 6th thru 10th place positions. Tech official, Carl Flowers, donated an extra $20 bucks on the night to each of those finishing positions on the night.

The Casey’s General Store Pure Stock class has been a battle between two drivers, Randal Schiffelbein Jr. and Jesse Shotts. Saturday night was another duel between these two drivers, who entered the night with multiple feature wins.

Schiffelbein would battle Tyler Garst for the top spot on the race track. After a back and fourth exchange, Schiffelbein would hold the top position, but Shotts too was on the move to the front of the field from his 3rd row starting spot.

Garst and Shotts would have an a good race with one another. Each wanting that 2nd position and the chance to work on Schiffelbein, the leader. Shotts emerged with the 2nd place position and looked to take down the leader as he moved closer as the laps ticked away.

The two would take the white flag nose-to-tail. In the end it was the rookie sensation, Schiffelbein, holding off Shotts for the win. It would be his 4th win of the season and with the win he would maintain his points lead in the division.

In post race tech inspection Shotts, the runner-up, failed to pull the required amount of vacuum for the class and was disqualified from the event. This decision moved Garst into the 2nd spot, 3rd was 2x feature winner in 2012, Darren Davenport, AJ Christian held down 4th and having his best run of the season finishing fifth was Terry Henkensiefken.

Special thanks would be given to Jay Bailey, Modified racer, as he paid $50 on the night to every driver that finished in the 7th position in all of the feature races.

The night was another successful running of the Steve Bowers Sr. Memorial at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. Many left the track on Saturday night counting down the days until the 2013 event.
