Fuqua Freight Train Continues At HPT!

Darron Fuqua #87 hits the trifecta as he picks up win #5 on the season and the 3rd straight at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. Reed Bros. Racing Photos.

Topeka, KS – It happened a year ago. Many didn’t think it would happen again, at least not this quick.

In 2011 Darron Fuqua got off to a good start but then had some mechanical/motor issues that knocked him out of the top 5 in points in the Washburn Tech Modified division. The story would end last year with Fuqua ripping off 11 wins in route to his 1st championship at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. Now to present day, Fuqua seems to be doing the encore act to 2011. Saturday night he used a late race pass of Steven Bowers to take in his 5th win of the season.

Last week he started in the 5th row and this week Fuqua would start in row number 6. The odds weren’t stacked in his favor heading into the main event.

As the green flag waved, Josh Everhart, a winner from 2011, jumped to the early lead and waged a pretty good battle with the 2nd place car of Justin Johnson. The two would run nose-to-tail around the speedway for several laps. Heading into turn 3, Johnson got into the back end of the Everhart ride. A problem developed and Johnson had to slow on the front straight. As he sat waiting another car would make contact with Johnson and bring out a long yellow.

Before the yellow Fuqua had started making up ground on the leaders. As the race went back to green Everhart still remained in the lead, Steven Bowers had closed into the 2nd spot and Jared Rogers ran in the 3rd spot. Fuqua was running the top 3 down at a torrid pace.

Fuqua would take a few laps to get around Rogers and in a daring move, tried to take the lead off of turn two with a three wide ride. Bowers came out of the melee with the lead, Fuqua went to 2nd and Everhart was shuffled to 3rd.

Just like the previous two weeks before, the cat and mouse game emerged. Bowers had the lead and was doing the best he could to keep Fuqua at bay. He moved his line in accordance with Fuqua. It looked as if Bowers might hold him off for the win. In the end, as Fuqua moved around on the track he was able to get passed Bowers on the high side on the front straight. Once in the lead, he dropped down to take the preferred line from Bowers and hold to win #5 on the season.

Everhart finished in the 3rd position, 4th went to Jared Rogers and Jake Richards rounded out the top 5 with a 5th place finish.

Lucas Isaacs races to win #2. Reed Bros. Racing Photos.

Another driver who is hot right now is Lucas Isaacs. Isaacs raced his way to a 2nd consecutive feature win in the White Line CDL Training B Mod class on Saturday night. In the last two weeks he has yanked down victories, but it has also vaulted him in the point standing s from 6th to 2nd. Not bad considering that his brother, Ethan, is the points leader at the moment. Lucas might be trailing big brother in the points, Lucas can still brag about having an extra win on the season.

The feature saw both brothers start on the front row for the feature. Just like he had done a week ago, Lucas shot immediately to the top spot. In the past few weeks Lucas has claimed to have figured out what had been ailing his car and his results on the track are proving that theory. He would go wire to wire and lead the A main tonight on his way to win number 2.

A former feature winner, Jeremy Chambers, gave a valiant effort at taking down the young Isaacs, but his efforts would come up short as he would finish in the 2nd place spot, Brian Murphy made strong run to finish in the 3rd position, the points leader, Ethan Isaacs, held on for a 4th place finish and Terry Bivins drove from 10th to 5th in the A Main.

The Casey’s General Store Pure Stock division is starting to see another dominating driver come to the forefront of the field. Randal Schiffelbein Jr. knocked down win #6 in his career (considering this is the 1st year of his career!).

Win #6 on the season went to Rookie Points Leader, Randal Schiffelbein Jr. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

In seasons past, driver like Zach Henery and Dylan Whitehead have dominated in this division and at the beginning of the season it looked as if it would be a multitude of drivers shining this season. So far the ‘true’ rookie, Schiffelbein, is putting on a display for the fans at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway.

Saturday night he would start on the front row with Jesse Shotts, another driver who has won 4 features on the season. The fans were primed for a showdown.

Shotts got off to the early lead, but before the races he talked about having carburetor issues a week ago and while in the lead his car began to struggle again this week. It was all the advantage that Schiffelbein would need to take over the top spot.

A couple of yellows would bunch the field up at different points of the night, but Schiffelbein was able to fend off all comers during the feature.

It would be Schiffelbein’s 6th win of the season and it would also pad his points lead atop the Pure Stock points standings.

Tyler Garst had another solid run going from 8th to 2nd in the feature, Tyler Hinrichs had one of his best feature runs of the season finishing 3rd, 4th went to Shotts and rounding out the top 5 was Dylan McDonald.

Win #10 came in for Terry Schmidt in the Factory Stock feature. Reed Bros. Racing Photos.

The driver with the most wins at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway, Terry Schmidt, took a week off in the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock feature. He didn’t actually take the week off, Schmidt just didn’t win the main event.

After finishing 3rd a week ago there was no doubt that Schmidt was back in form tonight. His car hugged and sped around the speedway to his liking all night long. In the end it would produce his 10th win of the season in 14 feature events. It would also extend his points lead over the competition in the Factory Stock division.

Frand Jaynes has been improving all season long and his efforts were rewarded tonight with a 2nd place finish in the main event, Steve Herrick drove to a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Zach Henery, who had to come from the back to the front and fifth went to Tyson Young.

Race #15 in the Super Saturday Showdown Series at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway at Heartland Park Topeka continues next Saturday night, July 28th!
