Valley & Humboldt Speedway’s Kick Off USMTS Hunt!

The Reaper will be looking for championship #2!

With the playoffs behind them, the drivers of the United States Modified Touring Series are set to embark on their annual championship battle in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy.

The youth movement carries the USMTS flag into this year’s title bout. Stormy Scott not only leads the Rookie of the Year standings, but the 22-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., comes into ‘The Hunt’ atop the points while another 22-year-old leadfoot – Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas – sits in the runner-up spot just three points back.

Just six more markers back is defending USMTS national champion Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, who won’t reach his 22nd birthday until this October. At 32 years of age, fourth-ranked Bryan Rowland of Woodward, Okla., is the elder statesman among the top five while the younger of the twin tandem, Johnny Scott, sits fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 coming into ‘The Hunt’ are 2010 USMTS national champion Jason Hughes, Daniel Hilsabeck, Jon Tesch, Dereck Ramirez and Mike Steensma. Nine-time USMTS national champ Kelly Shryock is just one point behind Steensma in 11th.

With a new qualifying format this year, 297 drivers are separated by just 119 points with 17 events over the course of 45 days remaining to sort out the very best of the Best of the Best. It all begins this week with four big events in the heartland of America.

‘The Hunt’ will wrap up at the Deer Creek Speedway with the 14th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-22, where the 2012 USMTS Casey’s Cup champion will be crowned.

Proving that any driver who qualifies for ‘The Hunt’ is capable of winning the title, Jason Krohn captured the 2007 title after entering the first event with just seven points and ranked 18th in the standings. He became just the second driver to wear the USMTS crown, dethroning Kelly Shryock who had captured all eight previous titles.

Similarly, Tim Donlinger found himself outside of the top-10 in points after the first two races of the 2008 championship crusade. He won the third event, but was only seventh in the rankings with 11 races to go but went on to upset Shryock for the 2008 title, sealing the deal with a thrilling victory on the final night of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree.

Despite winning just two races all season, Shryock went on to claim his ninth USMTS National Championship in 2009 by just 33 points, beating an 18-year-old up-and-comer named Ryan Gustin. Jason Hughes finally secured his first USMTS National Championship in 2010 while Gustin settled for runner-up honors again, but ‘The Reaper’ roared back in 2012 to claim his first title.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: At each of the 22 USMTS Casey’s Cup Series qualifying events, drivers earned points which they could accumulate until the start of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup. At each race, the main event winner earned 11 points, with 10 points for the second-place finisher, 9 points for third and so on down to a minimum 3 points for every “A” Main starter. Drivers not qualifying for the “A” Main got 2 points.

Drivers could earn a maximum of 100 points and three drivers – Stormy Scott, Rodney Sanders and Ryan Gustin – reached that plateau. Then, following the final qualifying event, each driver who had competed in at least one event got 1 bonus point for each successive event attended without an absence. Stormy Scott’s perfect attendance during the USMTS Casey’s cup Series explains why he has 22 bonus points while Sanders received 17 bonus points as he competed in 17 straight events before missing one race late in the campaign.

From here on out, the traditional USMTS points system is used for each event in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup.

USMTS POINTS SYSTEM: “A” Main Finish – 1. 100 points, 2. 95 points, 3. 91 points, 4. 87 points, 5. 84 points, 6. 81 points, 7. 78 points, 8. 76 points, 9. 74 points, 10. 72 points, 11. 70 points, 12. 68 points, 13. 66 points, 14. 64 points, 15. 62 points, 16. 60 points, 17. 58 points, 18. 56 points, 19. 55 points, 20. 54 points, 21. 53 points, 22. 52 points, 23. 51 points; all other “A” Main starters earn 50 points while non-qualifiers get 45 points each. In addition, each driver who leads at least one “A” Main lap earns 1 point and the driver leading the most “A” Main laps earns another 2 points.

CASEY’S CREW: Jason Cummins, Al Hejna and Jeremy Payne will represent Casey’s General Stores and their affiliated vendors during each race of ‘The Hunt.’ All three members of the Casey’s Crew will have unique graphics for their USMTS Modifieds, snazzy new branded driving suits, autograph cards and more, plus each driver will be making appearances at local Casey’s General Stores locations at various events.

Thursday’s event at the Valley Speedway will be the debut of this year’s Casey’s Crew drivers and their newly-designed Modifieds. Cummins, of New Richland, Minn., will be carrying the Cheetos colors on his #71 Skyrocket Modified while fellow young gun Payne, of Springfield, Mo., will represent SLAP Frozen Energy with his #186 GRT Modified. Last but not least, Hejna will be making his second go-around as a member of the Casey’s General Stores sponsored trio. ‘The A-Train’ from Clear Lake, Iowa, will be driving the #7 BC Chassis sponsored by Snickers.

Be sure to stop by a Casey’s General Store location before and after the races for all your supplies and needs, and remember to get your $2-off admission coupons available on raceday at most events during ‘The Hunt.’ Check out www.caseys.com for more information or to find the location nearest you.

TOP DOG BONUS: Beginning with Thursday’s kick-off at the Valley Speedway, all drivers ranked among the top-10 points in ‘The Hunt’ are guaranteed a minimum of $400 in winnings at each event.
