Wild Ending Puts Everhart In Victory Lane At BriggsAuto.Com Speedway

The #7J of Justin Johnson could not fend off the #21J of Josh Everhart in overtime of the Modified feature. Reed Bros. Racing Photos.

Topeka, KS – As 115 cars jammed into the pit area. BriggsAuto.Com Speedway employees, fans and race teams prepared for a great evening of racing. By the end of the event fans had gotten their fill by watching 16 heat races, 4 b features and 4 features!

It was the ending of the night that had fans scratching their head. The Washburn Tech Modified feature had to go into “Overtime” after the Race Director, Terry Watland, decided that a yellow should be thrown as the racers were coming to the checkered flag for a wreck that happened in turn number two on the white flag lap.

Grant Junghans and Josh Henery got tangled up in turn #2 after everyone had taken the white flag. As the field raced down the back straight Watland called for the yellow flag and passed the information on to the racers’ via their raceceivers.

The racers continued to race to the checkered flag as the yellow light or yellow flag had not been set out to signify the end of the race. Justin Johnson, the leader, came out of turn number 4 and took the checkered flag as drove underneath the flag stand. While Johnson drove underneath the flag stand, Bob Bardsley, the flagman at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway, pulled out the yellow flag and dropped it on the rest of the field as the 2nd place car of Josh Everhart and Shad Badder, the 3rd place car, drove through the finish line along with the rest of the competitors.

Everyone in attendance thought that the race had ended, but with Watland’s call for the yellow flag on the back straight away that meant that the race was, in fact, not over yet. It would mean that the racers would have to go through a green, white, checkered scenario. So to get the win Johnson would have to do it all over again.

When the green flag came out on the restart it was Johnson that got out to the front, but Josh Everhart, a former feature winner in 2012, was coming on strong. Everhart would run the high side and Johnson the middle groove. Badder was also in the hunt as he sat in a very close 3rd. The racers came to the white flag and Everhart’s momentum carried him into the lead. As Everhart took the lead it was over! He would go on to to take the win in overtime.

Johnson came home in 2nd, MLRA Late Model Ace, John Anderson, finished in 3rd, 4th went to Tyler Schmidt and rounding out the top 5 was Badder.

Terry Schmidt continued his march toward a 2012 Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock Championship as he won his 12th race of the season.

Schmidt would battle with Steve Herrick as the start of the Factory Stock main event. Herrick, the feature winner from 2 weeks ago, worked with Schmidt as the two would go side by side for the first few laps of the feature. As he has done in the past, Schmidt got to the front of the field and put everyone in the rear view mirror.

As 4 races are left in the season, Schmidt still has the chance to tie Zach Henery’s record win total from a year ago with 16 feature wins.

Herrick raced his way to a runner-up finish, Jake Conley, in his first time to the track, finished in 3rd, another first time competitor, Chad Eckelberry sped to a 4th place finish and Matt Field scored a top 5 in 5th place.

The Factory Stock feature flirted with perfection as the feature almost went from flag to flag with out a caution. A rarity in the racing world.

Zach Henery got the bad luck award on the night. Henery in his heat race got stuffed into the wall in turn 2 and the damage prevented him from participating in the A Main. It was a bad break for Henery and a bad deal for the fans as the 4x winner was not able to make it out for the feature.

Jesse Shotts called his shot and then followed through by winning the Pure Stock A Main. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

In the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock feature one word could be used to describe the race, dominance.

Jesse Shotts had won 5 features in the Pure Stock class in 2012. In the month of August, Shotts was 0fer. That’s right, he didn’t win a single race! He knew that his fortune needed to change as his last victory came back on June 30.

At the beginning of the night Shotts called his shot, just like Babe Ruth. He said that he would be getting it done tonight and would be talking to the track announcers in victory lane. Shotts would not go back on the promise as he jumped to the lead and drove to the finish. He wired the field from start to finish. The win also propelled Shotts back into the 2nd spot in the point standings.

The racing action was hot behind Shotts. Several racers were slicing and dicing for positions all over the speedway. It was the first time in the history of the Pure Stocks that a full field of 24 cars started the A Main. Fans were not disappointed by the action they saw.

Tyler Hinrichs celebrated his best finish of the season in 2nd (he wasn’t challenged either on the night like Shotts), points leader Randal Schiffelbein Jr. was held up in traffic but drove from 12th to 3rd in the main event and then Team Garst rounded out the top 5 as Tyler finished 4th and Lafe in 5th.

Steven Goodman flies to the checkers. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

In the White Line CDL Training B Mod A Main, it was the Spiderman, Steven Goodman, driving to the victory.

There must have been something magical about being in the 6th row at the start of the main event. Goodman and Jake Richards started 11th and 12th respectively, but by the end of the night they were able to avoid the carnage and the mayhem and finish 1st and 2nd.

It was on a restart in the early in the feature that saw Goodman get by the early leader, Lucas Isaacs, and take the top spot. Goodman’s setup was spot on during the feature as he was able to run wherever he needed to maintain the top spot. His power was on display as once he was in the front of the field he wouldn’t be pressured.

At the end of the night Goodman performed his best immitation of Spiderman as he scaled the fence during his victory lane celebration. It was Goodman’s 2nd win of the season at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway.

Richards finished in 2nd, Isaacs would finish in the 3rd spot, 4th went to Bobby Kerbs, who made his 1st trip to HPT, and 5th was Terry Bivins who started 13th and finished 5th.

The action returns to BriggsAuto.Com Speedway next Saturday night, Sept. 8, as race #20 of the Super Saturday Showdown Series will be contested.
