Cleveland, Levin, Gray, Fuller, and Thiessen Crowned Champions at Salina

by Dusty Wiegert – SALINA, Kan. — The 2012 regular season came to a conclusion on Friday September 21 at the Salina Speedway in Salina, Kansas with five Champions crowned, none of which picked up Championships the previous year.

For the Belleville Motorsports IMCA Modified division a former multiple time National Champion swooped in to compete on this night, leaving with the top prize when the dirt settled. David Murray Jr. staged an impressiveside by side duel with Corey Lagroon and was finally able to squeeze past Lagroon to pick up the feature win. Lagroon settled for second with Rodger Peck third and Joe Cleveland fourth. Danny Morrison Jr. was the Hard Charger after starting fifteenth and finishing eighth. With his fourth place finish Cleveland wrapped up the points title. Murray and Lagroon won the heat races.

Newcomer Blaine Walt furthered his state of Kansas points lead with a
feature win in his first ever appearance at the Speedway in the Xtreme
Motorsports IMCA Northern Sport Mods. Walt easily distanced himself away
from the field and rode to the win followed by Josh Rice, Mark Franklin,
and Jacob Schmutz. Franklin was the Hard Charger after starting tenth.
After winning Rookie of the Year in 2011 Jesse Levin followed it up with
his first Championship in 2012 in the division, winning over last year’s
Champion Rice. Schmutz and Rice won the heat races.

Long time veteran Bud Lee marked off another win in the Auto House Mod Lite
division as he walked away from the pack. He was chased by Corbin Pickerill
in second, Brandon Gray in third, and Brian Davidson in fourth. Gray was
the Hard Charger, coming from eleventh place. He also put the exclamation
mark on the season with the points championship win, finishing ahead of
Pickerill in the final standings. Davidson and Lee won the heat races.

In the closest points race of the night a recount was needed to determine
the Champion for the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks. In the feature event
Brian Stich made his return to the Speedway and Victory Lane, out pacing
Aaron McBride, Mike Traskowsky, and Mark Normandin. Jake Hedlund was the
Hard Charger after starting twelfth and finishing fifth. The big story,
though, involved two drivers who were knocked out of competition early. GW
Fuller, the points leader by three heading into the night, and Rick
Slothower both left the track early. When the finishes were resolved both
drivers were tied in the final standings. Both drivers won the same amount
of races, so then it was finally concluded on second place finishes, with
Fuller having one more that Slothower, giving him the Championship.
Traskowsky, Normandin, and McBride won the heat races.

Brian Dunsworth held off a hard charging Russell Roberg to capture the win
in the T&R Dirt Construction Mini Stocks. Wade Heller finished third with
Paco Montague in fourth. Wade Heller was the Hard Charger after starting
ninth. Brendon Thiessen captured the Championship aboard his Mini Truck,
finishing ten points ahead of Montague. Thiessen and Montague also picked
up the heat race wins.

The attention of the Speedway now shifts into the 2nd Annual Fall Fling
this upcoming weekend September 27-29. An open practice session will be
held on Thursday night from 6-9PM with full programs of racing on Friday at
8PM and Saturday at 7PM.
