Topeka, KS – A famous Kansan, Dorothy Gale, once said, “There is no place like home.”

Tonight a 2x, defending, track champion, Darron Fuqua got the true sense of what that statement meant.

After being absent on opening night at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway, Fuqua came home Saturday night to reclaim his top spot as he went on to an easy victory in the Washburn Tech Modified feature.

“It means a lot to me,” said Fuqua, “I mean, it’s my home track. We missed last week and I was curious to see where we would stand. I have been running good with the USMTS (Modified Touring Series), but everyone that runs here is pretty competitive too. I am just glad we are still a contender.”

Fuqua was more than a contender on Saturday night. At the drop of the green flag he got off to a good start and battled the early leader, Jay Bailey, for a few laps before taking control. Once at the point position Fuqua checked out on the field. His new Venom Chassis by Fuqua liked the HPT surface and it showed as he got passed several lapped cars before a yellow flag would evaporate his huge lead.

“I didn’t want to see it (the yellow flag),” said Fuqua, “I felt pretty comfortable with my lead. We passed quite a few lapped cars and I felt like I had a few between me and 2nd place. I always hate to get 2nd back up on my bumper. You just never know what could happen in a few corners.”

As the field came down to restart the race it didn’t take long for Fuqua to spread the distance between 1st and 2nd place. He would extend the lead all the way to the checkered flag. It was a strong performance from the reigning champ.

“It was a good race,” said Fuqua, “the track was slick, slow, the car did everything that it was suppose to do and I am real happy with the win.”

Robert Shepard had a strong runner-up finish after starting 8th, the biggest mover of the night was Kerry Davis who started 22nd and drove to a 3rd place finish, Daniel Hilsabek finished 4th in his 1st ever race at BrggsAuto.Com Speedway and Jay Bailey rounded out the top 5.

One of the most exciting races of the night happened in the White Line CDL Training B Mod division.

For the 2nd straight week, the feature event wasn’t decided until the final corner!

Before the night got started B Mod racer, Heath Murry, said that he would measure the success of the 2013 season by the fact if he won a feature or not. Murry almost looked like a profit. He would carry the lead in the feature event until the last corner of the last lap.

Murry had opened up a big lead on the the rest of the competition. Lap after lap, Dustin Thulin was chipping away at that big lead. Late in the race a yellow flag would come out just as Thulin was closing in on Murry. In the remaining 3 laps we would see a couple of more yellow flags that would bunch the field up. Thulin at this point was still unable to get by Murry. The final yellow would set up an exciting finish.

As the field came down to the final restart, Thulin made a strong move that put him door to door with Murry going into the first corner. Exiting the turn the two stayed side by side. Heading down the back straight they made contact. Murry would get a little loose, but both competitors were able to gather it back up and continue on. Murry was still holding the slight advantage. As the two started the final circuit of the night, they would still be racing door to door. Thulin on the inside and Murry on the outside. Neither driver wanting to give an inch.

Thulin took the bottom line heading into turn 3, Murry would try to pinch Thulin down to take away his momentum and in the end coming out of the final corner Murry’s car would drift up the race track and Thulin would get a great run off the bottom and would take the win by the length of his car.

A great race, where both drivers appreciated the good racing and the close competition.

Last week’s runner-up, Jake Richards, finished in the 3rd position, 4th went to Jeremy Chambers and Bryan Rigsby crossed the line in 5th.

Tyler Garst won last week’s Casey’s General Store Pure Stock feature by making a move late in the race. Tonight he would have to wait to make his move. The move he needed to make happened right in front of him.

Darren Davenport gained the early advantage in the feature, but on a restart still early in the race Davenport would lose oil pressure. In the process of getting off the track he tangled with the 2nd place car of Darrin Christy. This would take Davenport out of the feature and hold up Christy and as this happened it was all that Garst needed to take over the top spot.

At the front of the pack Garst would run away from the competition. Christy would close in on him, but he wouldn’t be able to find the momentum to get by the leader in the end.

For the 2nd straight year in the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock division one driver would win the first two features. Last year it was Darren Davenport and this year it was Tyler Garst duplicating the feat. Next week Garst will have the opportunity to earn a hat trick.

Randy Kohn scored the 3rd place finish on the night, rebounding from last week was Scott Garcia who finished 4th and Tyler Garst’s father, Scott, came home with a 5th place finish on his first night out in 2013.

In the Ferrellgas Stock Car feature event it was another driver repeating from one week ago.

Terry Schimdt visited victory lane quite often in 2012 and looks like he is going to be there again in 2013. Schimdt backed up his win from last week with another victory on Saturday night.

The race got started with Dustin Sievers jumping out to the early lead. Sievers who has been steadily improving as a race car driver looked strong at the front of the field in the early going. Sievers would hold on to the top spot until Schmidt would pull up alongside him. The racers would go side by side for a few laps before Schmidt would eventually get the advantage and open a big lead. Schimdt was able to gain a big lead by the action that was going on behind him.

Travis Tenpenny, Steve Herrick, Zach Henery and Eric Weyer were all battling hard for positions 2 through 5. As these drivers battle each other, Schmidt was up front all by himself. The race that these 4 drivers were putting on was as exciting as any race at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway in the past few years.

Tenpenny would win the battle for 2nd, Herrick finished in the 3rd position, 4th went to Henery and E. Weyer would finish in the 5th position.

A total of 88 racers checked in on Saturday night. Next week the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown will continue with race number 3 on the season. Spectator gates will open at 5 p.m., hot laps will start at 6:15 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7 p.m.
