Topeka, KS – Every now and then you find a team, or individual, in the sports world that pulls off a perfect season. The 1972 Miami Dolphins, 1972 UCLA Bruins and the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers all pulled off this feat to achieve legendary status. Now it’s Darron Fuqua trying to pull off the impossible feat of staying perfect in the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown Modified division. Saturday night after 4 races, Fuqua is getting the job done.

“I am just excited and happy that everything is working out,” said Fuqua, “all the hard work over the winter and the past 5 years is coming to a head and hopefully it keeps going up from here.”

In the Washbun Tech Modified feature on Saturday night Fuqua wired the field from start to finish. Starting in the outside front row, Fuqua blasted past the pole setter, Adam Schrag, to take the lead exiting turn 2 and he never looked back from there.

“I am pretty confident with the equipment that we have,” said Fuqua, “especially with this car we have here, it’s just awesome it’s got drive and side bite. As long as I keep it maintained and do the things that I should be doing, hopefully, we will be toward the front.”

With the exception of Fuqua not racing on opening night, he has been having the time of his life since returning on week #2. The feature win extended his perfect streak in 2013 at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. In 4 races this year, Fuqua has won 4 heat races and 4 feature events.

Kerry Davis put on a strong run finishing in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Steven Bowers Jr., newcomer, Adam Schrag, held on for a 4th place finish and Robert Shepard put together a 5th place finish in the main event.

The Ferrellgas Stock Car feature had all the qualities of a action film!

Leif Weyer and Dustin Sievers started the night off by dueling at the front of the field. At one point you could have thrown a blanket over the top 6 cars in the feature as the field tightened up around the leaders.

Zach Henery made a bold move to take the lead in the middle of the race from Sievers. This would be the first of several exciting events to unfold over the last half of the race. Leif Weyer would get his shot at Henery, but couldn’t get by him to take the top spot. Steve Herrick, in the meantime, battled with Eric Weyer and disposed of him and then did the same as he drove by Leif Weyer to take 2nd place.

Herrick caught up to Henery at the front of the field. As the laps continued to click off Henery had a tough time keeping his car on the bottom line around the race track. In one corner Henery drove up the track and Herrick drove by for the lead. A late race yellow would set up a 3 lap dash to the finish with Herrick, Henery and Leif Weyer at the front of the pack.

On the restart Herrick had trouble coming out of turn 4 to restart the race. Henery, Leif Weyer and Tyson Young all shot by Herrick on the restart. Henery, once again, would drive up the race track while leading and this let Leif Weyer take the top spot heading to the white flag. Leif Weyer, Henery, Young and a recovering Steve Herrick would make a sprint to the finish but it would be Leif Weyer getting his 1st win of the season. It was a surprise finish to an exciting race.

“I figured the 5K (Herrick) had it won for sure,” said Leif Weyer, “but when he didn’t start on that one restart, I knew Zach would push and sure enough he did and when I got him cleared I said that this one was mine!”

Young would get 2nd in the end, Herrick battled back for a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Henery and James King would round out the top 5 in 5th place.

A new winner stopped into victory lane in the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock class.

Scott Garst started on the pole position of the feature and would wire the field as he would lead every lap on the way to the win.

Donnie Devers would get the first crack at knocking Garst off the top spot, but he would spin ending any chance he would have at the win. AJ Christian would be the next driver to take a shot at Garst. Christian would slowly chip into the lead and by the end of the feature he was on the back bumper of Garst. Unfortunately for Christian, the laps would come to an end and Garst was out in front.

Garst’s win would be his 1st in two years at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. A part-time racer, Garst, who was competing in just his 2nd race this season, wanted to break his car in for his son Tyler, the current points leader in the division. As he picked up the win, Scott Garst might decided to stay behind the wheel a little longer.

In the White Line CDL Training B Mod main event Ethan Isaacs, the defending champion of the divison, became the 4th different winner in 5 races this season.

Isaacs would have to wait a little longer to get his win after ‘The Big One’ occurred on lap 4 of the feature.

On lap 4, a whopping total of 9 cars were involved in a wreck that would bring out a long red flag situation. After the melee was cleared the racing would resume.

Isaacs would get a good restart and from there he wouldn’t be touched. Isaacs 2013 season hasn’t been exactly what he had hoped for, but the win on Saturday night could just be the turning point in his season that could take him back to another championship.

Dustin Thulin finished in the 2nd spot, Dave Samuels had a good run finishing in the 3rd spot, 4th went to Heath Murry and Nic Bennett garnered another top 5 by coming in at the 5th position.

The Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown will continue next Saturday, June 1st. Spectator gates will open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:15 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7 p.m.
