One would have never guessed Thunder Hill Speedway had received almost 6” inches of rain throughout the week. The Conkwright family and entire staff continue to put on the best dirt track racing program in the area. Dave Emery, scheduled to report to boot camp in the United States Marine Corp on Monday, sang the National Anthem before the drop of the green flag as the Speedway welcomed back Bumper to Bumper/WIx Filter to the event. One hundred employees and friends enjoyed a catered dinner and some great racing action. Heinen Repair Service joined us in the newly sponsored Prairie Band Casino VIP Tower.

First up was the Casey’s General Store IMCA Sport Compact Division. Several laps after taking the green flag Dan Canady’s machine experienced mechanical difficulties and is unable to continue. After the single file restart, Wade Heller charged into the lead and never looked back. At the checker it was Wade Heller with the win followed by Morgan Ziegler, Danie Ziegler, Alex Boyden and Lexi Boyden. Who needs a trophy girl? Not Wade Heller! Heller, aka “Showtime,” managed to get the Ziegler ladies to hold up the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane sign for him during his photo shoot.

If you look back through the statistics for the Kansas National Guard IMCA Hobby Stocks you will see that other than one DNF, Kelly Pihl consistently finishes inside the top five. Saturday evening would be no different. Kelly started third row inside and worked his way towards the front. The Patrick Thyfault machine has been extremely dominant in the last few weeks as he made his way to the front of the field. Thyfault and Pihl would race bumper to bumper for several laps. As the white flag was shown to Thyfault, they raced into lap traffic. Thyfault goes high in turns three and four and Pihl takes the lower line as they raced toward the checkered flag. Pihl pulls off the win with Thyfault in second followed by Ryan Gilland, Brian Stich and Mallory Stiffler.

The Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Northern Sportmod division provides awesome weekly racing excitement week after week. Dusty Leonard has had some dominating performances in this class. Leonard started second row outside and quickly moved into the lead. Curtis Dreasher started fifth row inside and charged his car into second place. Dreasher could not scratch his way to Leonards back bumper allowing Leonard back in the Pit Pass Liqour Victory Lane. He was chased by Curtis Dreasher, Kyle Olberding, Eddie Schwope Jr. and Brandon Mitchell.

The BSB Manufacturing IMCA Modifieds continually entertain the crowd. Tough competitors fill this class with some very competitive veterans in it. From the drop of the green flag, Tom Charles and Scott Brown fought a tough battle up front. Jordy Nelson returned for the second time this season, but pulled off early. As they race towards the finish, the lead cars changed positions several times. Charles, Grabouski and Brendon Gemmill raced hard for the checkered. At the checkered flag it was Grabouski in the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane closely followed by Tom Charles, Brendon Gemmill, Troy Gemmill, and Allen Halderman.

The last group of the night was the Heinen Repair Service IMCA stock cars . The Dirt Track Central Great Plains Stock Car Tour presented by Goodland Machine made their second trip to Thunder Hill Speedway. This series brought drivers from several states to Thunder Hill Speedway as twenty-five stock cars took to the track. They provided for some of the best on your feet racing action all through the race. After the drop of the green flag, Justin Temeyer and Jason Rogers battled for the lead early. Mike Nichols flexed his muscles, and charged toward the front of the filed picking off competitors one at a time, before putting himself in the lead. Jason Rogers put on a valiant effort to get to the front but his machine faded after a restart leaving it up to Jeff Tubbs and Temeyer to try to overtake Nichols. The hard charger in this one goes to Jim Powell Jr. Powell started twelfth row inside, spins out at one point, goes to the back of the field and to raced towards the front. As the final checkered flag falls, it’s Mike Nichols standing triumphantly in the Pit Pass Liquor Victory Lane with Jeff Tubbs in second, Justin Temeyer, Jim Powell Jr. and Scott Granzella rounding out the top five.

Racing resumes next Saturday night at Thunder Speedway with all five classes of IMCA race cars putting on the best Saturday night racing show in Northeast Kansas. Saturday, August 10th will be the final Ladies Night of the season. ALL ladies in FREE! Bring a friend and a cooler!!! Hot laps start at 7PM with racing to follow.
