Salina, KS – The focus on the night at Salina Speedway surrounded the ASCS National & Midwest Region Sprint Cars, but some of the best racing of the night occurred in the AutoHouse Towing Mod Lites and the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Weekly Racing Series Late Models.

Delbert ‘The IceMan’ Smith has been racing Late Models for decades in the Midwest. It seems that just like a fine wine Smith is getting better with age. No stranger to victory lane in all of his years racing, Smith is flexing his muscle at Salina Speedway.

Smith is coming off a championship season a year ago and in 2014 he now has 2 feature wins and another early season points lead after winning Friday night’s feature.

It was Daniel ‘Popsicle’ Smith that jumped out to the early lead in the main event.

Daniel Smith, who had a strong run to begin the night finishing 2nd in his heat, stormed out to the lead and would hang on for almost half of the main event at the front.

The tidbit of irony in this story is that Daniel Smith is the son of Delbert Smith and just like a true competitor there is no ‘I am going to let you win’ in this family.

At the halfway mark of the feature Delbert had made his way up from his 8th starting position to over take Daniel for the top spot. Once out front ‘The Iceman’ was in familiar territory.

Daniel would make a run at his father during the 2nd half of the race as they went in and out of lapped traffic. At one point contact was evident between the two racers. All would be fine in the world of racing at Salina Speedway.

Delbert would go to his 2nd win of the 2014 season and Daniel would get another runner-up finish on the year.

Darrick Klima, the winner of the 2nd heat, had a strong run on the night and would come home 3rd, the ‘RocketMan’ Chris Kratzer would come home 4th after winning the last feature and Justin Kinderknecht rounded out the top 5 in 5th.

Dustin Huehl won the 1st heat race of the night in the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Weekly Racing Series Late Models.

The AutoHouse Towing Mod Lites don’t get enough credit when it comes to the great racing they put on night in and night out at Salina Speedway.

A driver that deserves a lot of credit in this division is Danny Morrison Jr.

Morrison headed into Friday night’s action at Salina Speedway having won his last 4 Mod Lite features. Morrison’s streak has seen him win at tracks in both Kansas and Nebraska.

It would be a tough feat for Morrison to get the win considering he would start outside row number 5 for the main event.

As the feature got underway it would only take 6 laps for the hot shoe of Morrison to take over the lead. In and out of traffic he made all the right moves to land him in the top spot. A spot he has come to know well at Salina Speedway. Passing competitors is nothing new to Morrison either. Early in the night he won the 1st heat race by going from last to first!

The Mod Lite of Morrison is firing on all cylinders at this point of the 2014 season. Morrison would sprint to the checkered flag for his 5th consecutive win in the car. It was his 2nd win of the season at Salina Speedway.

Trey Morgan put together a strong run and held on to the 2nd spot after winning the 2nd Heat Race of the night, Brandon Gray would keep pace with Morrison for awhile as the two moved forward, but Gray would stall out in the 3rd position, it was Salina’s own, Mike Zrubek, finishing 4th on the night and Ryan Secrest started 5th and finished 5th in the A Main.

Weekly racing will be ready to rumble next Friday night, June 6th, the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Models, Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, Coors Light Street Stocks, Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks and Chamucos Night Club Mini Stocks

Racing gets underway with Hot laps at 7:15 p.m. and heat races shortly after that.
