Salina, KS – After a one week hiatus due to rain, Salina Speedway got back to action Friday night with a large car count!

A slight rain delay didn’t dampen the spirits of the fans or the racers, either. Signifying to Mother Nature that she wouldn’t win on this night!!!

It was a star studded field in the Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Modified division on Friday night. The quality and quantity that comprised the field gave the fans one of the best races of the season.

Van Gemmill, a veteran racer of many years, raced his way to the early lead in the Modified Feature. Gemmill would see that lead taken away by David Murray, a multiple time IMCA Modified National Champion.

Murray used his muscle to go by Gemmill and it looked as if Murray was going to go on to the win, but then again maybe not.

In all the years Gemmill has been racing he knew that it wasn’t over until the checkered flag was dropped. Gemmill kept hitting his marks and found himself alongside Murray once again. This time it was Gemmill’s move that would put him back into the lead and he would hang on for the win.

Gemmill would become the 8th different feature winner of the season in the Modified division.

Murray would finish 2nd, 3rd went to Brian Knoell, 4th was Corey Burch and rounding out the top 5 was Danny Morrison Jr.

Belleville Motor Sports IMCA Modified Heat Race Winners were Gemmill and Knoell.

The points battle brewing in the M & H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mod division took center stage on Friday night. Austin Carter and Tyler Frye have been going at each other all season and Friday night it went up another level.

Jeff Olson took the early shot at the lead on Friday night in the Sport Mods, but it wouldn’t be for long as Frye and Carter were moving up from 10th and 11th starting spots to begin the feature.

Frye, a former champion, would take the lead. After getting a slow start to the season Frye has been figuring things out. In doing so he has logged multiple feature wins and this night he was looking to pull off another win. Once at the front of the field Frye was flexing his muscle.

Carter, who came into the night with the points lead, gave chase to Frye but couldn’t get over the hump to take down the former champ. After the night Carter would still maintain the points lead by a single digit.

Frye rolled to his 4th win of the season and kept his hopes for another championship in tact.

Carter finished in the runner-up spot, finishing 3rd after starting 12th was Daniel Gottschalk, Karmyn Gruber finished 4th and Jeff Olson held on for 5th.

M & H Motors IMCA Northern Sport Mod Heat Race Winners were Frye, Carter and Gottschalk.

In the BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model Feature it was a case of you think what’s going to happen just might not happen.

Chris Kratzer has won a few races this season in the Late Model ranks. As a matter of fact Kratzer has 3 wins to his credit and is currently sitting 2nd in the points standings to Delbert Smith.

On Friday night it was Kratzer jumping out to the lead and navigated a course that looked to be sending him to win #4 on the season.

That was until lapped traffic and defending champion, Delbert Smith, started to run him down.

As Kratzer got up to lapped traffic Smith started to plan his attack. Sometimes being in 2nd is the place to be in a race for the simple fact you can use other competitors to your advantage.

That’s exactly what the ‘Ice Man’ did, he used the lapped traffic to his advantage and went by Kratzer as they worked around Salina Speedway.

Smith went on to win #5 on the season, but more impressively it was win #3 in the past 4 races! It goes to show you that the Ice Man is like a fine wine, he gets better with age.

Kratzer finished 2nd, 3rd went to Darrick Klima, Brad Morris found his way to a 4th place finish and Tyler Bradshaw finished in the 5th spot.

BSB Manufacturing NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model Heat Race Winners were Smith and Kratzer.

Justin Kinderknect might have been the biggest surprise at Salina Speedway on Friday night.

Trey Morgan led every single lap, but the most important one in the AutoHouse Towing Mod Lite Feature.

Morgan got out in front of the field on Friday night and was gone, or so it appeared. Morgan ran a flawless race until the white flag lap.

As Morgan came to the white flag, Kinderknecht was still working his way to the leader from his 4th row outside starting spot. Beginning the white flag lap Kinderknecht was at Morgan’s back door. Out of turn two Morgan would drift up high on the racing surface and that’s all the edge that Kinderknecht needed to drive by and take the win on the final lap.

It was win #3 for Kinderknecht, but more importantly it put him in a tie for the points lead with Danny Morrison Jr., who had troubles in the feature on Friday night.

Morgan finished 2nd, Mike Zrubek turned in a strong 3rd place finish, 4th went to Earl Kinderknecht and 5th was Brandon Gray.

Mike Traskowsky is riding a freight train in the Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stock division or should it be said that he is driving a freight train? Either way Traskowsky came into the night with 6 wins on the season, including the last 3 races.

Friday night would be no different for Traskowsky.

The Traskowsky ‘Train’ started the feature in the 3rd position and it didn’t take him long to find the lead. In the lead he wouldn’t be slowed down on the night. Traskowsky would roll to his 7th win of the season, his 4th straight! The win would also help him pad his points lead in the division.

Adam Armstrong started 9th and would run to the 2nd spot by the checkers, Tony Slothower was the mover of the night going from 16th to 3rd in the main event, 4th went to Neil Normandin and Kelly Pihl rounded out the top 5.

Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stock Heat Race Winners were Traskowsky and McBride.

Next Friday night, Aug. 29th, it’s the Barry Brittendall Memorial which is the final STAND PACKER event of 2014!
