J. Boney Works The High Side For A Win, Donaldson Gets 1st In Grand National & A Repeat Winner, Mike Busby, Wins Factory Stocks At Lakeside Speedway umboldt Speedway

by Larry Lowrey

Kansas City, KS - Fans in attendance at Lakeside Speedway on Friday, June 25, were treated to one exciting show. I don't mean a re-run of "Heartland Thunder." I am talking about another great night of racing action at the fast 1/2 mile track in Kansas City, KS.

Justin Boney is one of the drivers featured in the new reality series on the Discovery Channel. Boney showed the fans just why he is one of the best modified drivers around. He stormed his way to the front and won running a groove that everyone seemed to avoid.

Starting in the 7th row, it didn't take long for Boney to start working through traffic. Boney made it look easy as he put his Hughes chassis on the high side of the speedway. The highest part on the track to be exact. He had a feeling that the bottom of the track would be crowded. So he took a gamble that paid big dividends.

"It was a good race, I think we both started in the 7th row," said Boney, "with 8 to go I got a vibration and I started to slow down. At that point I didn't expect to win the race. I knew the top was going to be left alone, for the most part, so we hoped for the best and it worked out."

While Boney took home the win, the race was filled with a lot of passing and tight racing action throughout the field.

Tim Karrick, a former track champion at Lakeside, held on for the runner-up spot on the night. Karrick got to the lead early from his 13th starting spot, but couldn't hold off the charge from Boney.

In other racing action, Yancy Shepard took home his 2nd top five finish in consecutive weeks. Shepard finished 3rd in the modified a main. It was another strong run for John O'Neal Jr. as he finished 4th. O'Neal kept his foot in the door for the points lead and Kerry Davis went through some ups and downs during the race but managed to hold on to the 5th spot.

Every now and then you will see a driver wear his emotions on his sleeve. Tonight Gary Donaldson got to show the Lakeside faithful his favorite emotion. Excitement.

Donaldson is a driver that has been steadily improving at Lakeside Speedway over the past year. He has gone from being in the 2nd half of the field, to running in the top 10 & now he can add winning an a main to his credit.

Starting in the 2nd row, Donaldson sprinted out to the lead. He held on to his line at the bottom of the track. Lap after lap he played it smart, sticking to the line that put him at the front of the field.

The big question that seemed to be on everyone's mind while Donaldson sat out in front, 'Was he a sitting duck? Would Clancy or Claxton run him down and go by?"

No. Donaldson had to fend off last year's champ, Chad Clancy on a couple of occasions. It was a challenge that he would meet and beat time and time again.

"It was awesome to come home in first tonight," said Donaldson, "We did really good. I think that was a big question for us (could we win a points race), I think we answered that. Yes."

During the post-race tech inspection, a happy Donaldson became surrounded by his fans and crew. Everyone wanted to celebrate and share their excitement with him.

Rebounding for the 2nd spot was Chad Clancy. Clancy's program has suffered some setbacks in the last few weeks, but this could be a shot in the right direction. The new points leader in the Grand Nationals finished 3rd, Gene Claxton, 4th went to Marshall Jewett and Darren Kling held on to the 5th spot for another top 5 finish.

Mike Busby used a line that he picked up from the runner-up Jason Ryun to win the Factory Stock feature.

"We worked hard every night of the week and Jim Conley helped us out this week and all the work paid off," said Busby, "Jason got down on the bottom and showed me that line. I just beat him back down to the spot and got my car right where I liked it and that was it. Jason showed it to me!"

Ryun and Busby would go at it back and forth. Until Busby changed his line and went to the bottom of the track. Ryun's only option would have been to go through or around Busby, but he couldn't make it work. Busby didn't make an error on his way to the win.

Ryun finished 2nd, 3rd went to the early leader of the race, Caleb McClellan, J.R. Billings drove his way to a 4th place finish and last week's winner, Darrin Christy, made the most of a long night with a top 5 finish.

Saturday night the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars roll into town. Lakeside Speedway Factory Stocks will also be in competition. The spectator gates will open up at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 6 p.m., qualifying begins at 6:30 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7:30 p.m.

Next Friday night Lakeside Speedway's regular weekly show will be back in action followed by a fireworks display.
