Agler Gets 1st Career Win In Modifieds, Grand National Win To Shaw & Jewett Rides To Factory Stock Win At Lakeside

by Larry Lowrey

For the first time in over a month, Lakeside Speedway finally put on it's third race of the 2010 season. Several rainout's and some badly needed maintenance to the track kept them from racing. The fans and racers turned back out in force tonight as the racing action heated up the track once again.

When you arrive in victory lane for the first time in your career, it's exciting! When arrive in victory lane and you get a text message from a former champion, who now spends his Saturdays and Sundays racing in the Nationwide and Sprint Cup, it's HUGE!

That's exactly what was running through 19 year old Cody Agler as he sat in victory lane Friday night. Agler was excited to win his first Modified feature at Lakeside Speedway, it was also the 1st win of his young career and it showed him just how far he has come in the just one full season in dirt track racing.

"I just kept looking at the board on the back stretch," said Agler, who just turned 19 in April, "I saw that the laps were winding down and I knew if I could get to him, I thought I could do it."

On a track that went through a lot of repair since April 30, Agler looked like a driver with 10 years experience. He didn't over power his car, he kept his cool and when the time came to take control he did.

"I got a good run in the middle of 3 and 4 and I just new I had it," said Agler.

The run propelled him by the early leader, John O'Neal Jr. From there he just had to keep it out front. A tough task for a kid who spent 15 years on a motorcycle racing instead of behind the wheel of a quarter midget, go kart or factory stock. Agler would hang on the lead for the last few laps and pick up his 1st checkered flag of his young career.

"Last year was a little rough for me," said Agler, "this year things are going better."

While he sat there and soaked up the moment. Agler had time to look at the text from Bowyer that stated... "When you win a race at Lakeside, it's Big!" Perfect encouragement for a young driver.

John O'Neal held on to finish 2nd, former track champion, Tim Karrick, finished in the 3rd spot, Darron Fuqua had his best finish ever at Lakeside in 4th position and rounding out the top 5 was the last race winner, Joe Walker.

Grand National racer Chad Shaw knows a couple of things about Lakeside Speedway. It's a tough to win at Lakeside Speedway and what it's like to win at Lakeside Speedway.

Shaw, who is in his 1st year of racing at Lakeside Speedway, picked off his 1st win Friday night.

"This is big... this is Awesome!," said Shaw after the feature, "Anytime you come here and you leave with a win it's special. The caliber of competition is so tough."

Shaw has been fast since his 1st race at Lakeside in 2010. The racing gods just haven't smiled on him until tonight.

From his 3rd row outside starting position it didn't take Shaw long to find his way to the front half of the field. He spent several laps running behind a former Lakeside Grand National Champion, Tim Billings.

Billings found the smooth, dry-slick race track to his liking, until he hopped up out of the low groove for just a second. That one second was all that Shaw needed to take over the lead. Before he could count the victory he still had a competitor breathing down his neck. It was his teammate, Gene Claxton.

Claxton another former track champion at Lakeside, seemed to be taking his time, waiting to make the right move on Shaw when something on his car went a miss. Claxton would pull into the infield off the back straight. Shaw kept on moving fore ward and raced his way to an easy victory.

Billings would finish 2nd, Kelby Ostrander crossed the stripe in 3rd, 4th went to Gary Donaldson and rounding out the top 5 was J. Genail.

Over the past few years the Factory Stock division at Lakeside Speedway has been one of the most competitive classes in the Midwest. Friday night showed just why the class is so tough.

The top 3 finishers in Friday night's feature started in the 4th, 5th & 6th rows. It was a race that made drivers think. It was a smooth, dry-slick track. Veteran drivers might be considered favorites when it comes to being more adept on different surfaces.

Marshall Jewett is a racer who enjoys racing. He is a driver that competes weekly in two different divisions at Lakeside Speedway and he only races at Lakeside Speedway. (He said that's how he stays married.)

Friday night Jewett used a combination of the low line and the high line during the Factory Stock feature on his way to victory. A victory that kept him in the points lead in the early part of the season.

"This win feels good," said Jewett, "we were leading the points coming here and we won, it's amazing. I don't think I have ever come in with the points lead and won."

Using the low line to position himself into the lead, Jewett moved up high to gain momentum around the 1/2 mile track. Several drivers throughout the field were trying to find a preferred line, but were having trouble. Two drivers, Darrin Christy and Jason Ryun had found their lines and began to chase down Jewett.

Ryun committed low, while Christy chose to go high and follow Jewett. It would be Christy that would come the closest to Jewett, but it would be all for not as he would claim his 1st win of the year and maintain the points lead in the Factory Stocks.

Christy finished a close 2nd, Ryun was 3rd, Dave Holcomb had a solid run finishing in 4th and in the 5th position was Nate Barnes.

Next Friday (June 4) night racing will resume at Lakeside Speedway for Kenny's Tile Night At The Races.

Spectator gates will open up at 5:00 p.m. Hot laps will be at 7:00 p.m. and the first race will go green at 7:30 p.m.

Adult tickets are $12.00, kids 8 to 14 are $6.00 and kids 7 and under are always FREE!
