Johnny Bone Jr. Doubles Up At Humboldt
by Scott Stewart
For the second time in as many weeks, Johnny Bone, Jr. bested the best that Humboldt Speedway has to offer in Modifieds.
What transpired in feature action this week was truly a pleasure to see. Having each won a heat race, Whitey Folk had the pole, with Bone to his outside. At the green, Folk took off like a rocket and went to the bottom of the track. Bone, however, stayed at the top of the Hummer high banks, prefering to run wide open in a long sweeping arc. As the bottom faded, so did Folk's early dominant lead. Still, Folk was firmly in command untill a lap 8 yellow flag bunched the field. At the onset of lap 10, Bone found the spot he wanted, took the lead, and set sail. Meanwhile, Folk had a real challenge holding on to the runner up spot, as he faced a serious challenge from his brother, Jess Jr. In fourth was Travis Patch. Rodney Sigg claimed fifth.
For the first five laps of the Street Stock feature, there were basically no less than four leaders, as Scott Stuart, Jay Laymons, Jr. Zack Marsh and Levi McGowen battled wheel to wheel. Marsh broke into the clear on lap five, but had to yield to the relentless pressure of McGowen on lap six. Laymons, meanwhile, had a flat tire that sent him to the rear of the lead lap cars. By the time the checkered fell on lap sixteen, McGowen had captured the win. Stuart recorded the second spot, Marsh was third, Scott Collins came home fourth, and Laymons was fifth.
B-Mod feature action was a tale of lapped traffic: Tod Kidwell led strong until traffic on lap 8. At lap 11, Kidwell, dueling with Riley Whitworth, got trapped behid a lapper, lost control for an instant, and wound up stationary in the bottom of turn three, bringing out a yellow flag, and ending what had been a good run for Kidwell. On the restart, Zack Simmons challenged Whitworth for the lead, until Jerry Kustenborter made a spectacular move to relegate Simmons to third on lap 13. By then, Kustenborter was out of time, and Whitworth recorded his third feature win of the season. Fourth went to Tyler James, as Billy Lyda rounded out the top five.
Steve Stuart was this weeks Factory stock feature winner, with Derrek Wilson second and Scott Cronk third. Jeff Cleaverfinished fourth, with Jeff Bowman fifth.
Neal Kisner won $185.00 in 50/50 money. Samantha Barnhardt won a gift certificate from the Grain Bin Resturaunt in Chanute.
