Topeka, KS - Every now and then you will see things that you won't believe. Some people will swear that they have seen things that don't even exist. Bigfoot, UFO's, Loch Ness Monster, etc. Fans that stayed for the show last night at Heartland Park Topeka, saw one of the best modified races ever run in the Midwest.
When you read this article you will see that Dave Trauernicht beat John Allen in the Modified Feature. What you won't see is that the two swapped spots back and forth in the last few laps, you won't see that Trauernicht was driving on a rough race track with broken ribs, you won't see that Trauernicht's car was put back together after a massive crash at Lakeside a week ago and you won't see the sportsmanship displayed between the top 5 drivers after the race.
The amount of moisture that collected over the week made it hard for the staff at Heartland Park to prep their racing surface. When this happens you get your track ready and hope for the best. As with most of the tracks in the area, they had a rough race track.
In the Modified A Main, Steven Bowers Jr. and Joey Selbach got things underway. John Allen would take command of the race in the early going.
Each driver would try to find the smoothest way around the track. In turns 3 and 4, it seemed to be almost up against the wall. In turns 1 & 2, it was high into 1 and exiting low out of 2.
As Allen set the pace up front, there was a lot of beating and banging for positions 3 through 24.
During the 2nd yellow of the night, the 4T of Trauernicht would leave the track with a left rear flat. Allen would take the green on the restart out of turn 4, while Trauernicht made his way back out on the track. It wouldn't be the last time you would hear from the last place car on the track at that moment.
Allen kept rolling on the high side with Steve Bowers and Joey Selbach right behind him. As the laps ticked down, more yellows would come out.
The next yellow saw Trauernicht, who had to go to the pits for a flat, sit inside the top 10. He was on the move.
As the race returned to green, Allen showed the way. Bowers would succumb to a flat tire. Selbach and Allen were now joined by Tom Charles and Dave Trauernicht up front. At the drop of the green flag, Trauernicht would move his way into the 2nd spot.
While the line was moving up to the high side. Trauernicht was putting his modified anywhere he thought he would get bite and move forward. He was at the bottom, he was in the middle and he was on the high side. Bouncing his way forward.
Finally he was in a spot to take the lead. Allen would not give up the lead so easy though. Allen and Trauernicht would put the fans into a frenzy as they went wheel-to-wheel and door-to-door for a couple of laps.
Coming out of 4 on the last lap it was going to be either Allen or Trauernicht. As they came to the line it was Trauernict picking up his first win at Heartland Park Topeka. Allen would finish 2nd, followed by Tom Charles in 3rd, Joey Selbach celebrated a solid 4th place finish and rounding out the top 5 on his first night out at HPT in '08 was Allen Henrey.
In the B - Mod Feature, Brent Alverson picked up the win, Shane Wettengel took home the Factory Stock A main and Eric Weyer won the Hobby Stock feature.
